I have a 1977 85hp johnson, I'm not sure if this is a problem or not, maybe paranoid. The motor starts fine and and idles fine after a few seconds on the warm up idler, My problem is when I pull away from the dock and out of no wake zone I come up on plain and that does fine, But about 50 to 75 yards into plain I get a slight miss or hesitation..never dies but a slight change in pitch 3 to 5 time in about 10 seconds time frame or so then it's fine and never does this rest of the day, I rebuilt the carbs last summer myself as well as a new impeller and decarbed with sea foam, The plugs are about 6 months old and I use champion L77JC4 gaped at.030 Could this be from the extra fuel from the choke and start up and priming sequence?

sounds like link n sinc are out just a little. your timing, plate maybe sticking just a little, and then frees up.

Sounds to me like it's trying to clear some fouled plugs. Is your thermostat allowing it to come up to temp?

It's strange that you would have that problem without having it repeat itself. However, look into the following areas as these are what usually causes that type problem.

This is the most likely.... Timer base sticking under the flywheel which would result in retarded spark. Check by (engine not running but in gear) having someone advance the throttle slowly ffrom idle to full throttle while you observe the timer base. If it sticks anywhere, find out why and repair as needed..... usually a tight "L" clamp (stick a thin washer under the tight one). Also caused by a faulty stator that might drip a sticky substance down on the nylon timer base retaining ring.

Could also be caused by.........
A fuel/leak (slight leak) somewhere in the fuel system, usually between the fuel pump and the fuel supply.

A failing fuel pump. This and the fuel leak theory can be tested simply by pumping the fuel primer bulb (acting as a manual fuel pump). If pumping the bulb eliminates the problem, figure out which flaw caused the problem.

A slightly fouled carburetor..... not likely as carburetors do not come and go. They're either bad or good.

Carburetor roller not aligned perfectly with the scribe mark on the cam (point where it should just toch and start to open the throttle butterflies). Also no likely as that problem would be consistent.

Use Champion QL77JC4 spark plugs gapped at .040.

Let us know what you find.

Re: motor skips when first gets going.

I did a link and sinc when I did the carb rebuild. But that doesn't mean anything, I'm not the best in the world just followed my manual on this,I will look at the stator more closely, Just from a quick scan I cannot see and and evidence from any leakage nice and bright green, As soon as my neighbor gets home we will do the timer base observation,

Thanks, I really love this site, Thank you so much for the information that y'all have spent many years and time to help people like me,
