Re: Motor Starts but won't shut off

You need to start at your ignition switch, turn the key to the run position. Do you have power to the purple wire on the switch? Do you have power on the purple wire on the + terminal of the coil?
If you have it at the switch, but not at the coil, there is a problem in the wiring somewhere between the coil and the switch.

Re: Motor Starts but won't shut off

Well I had power at both points this morning but no longer have power at the coil when in the run position on the ignition switch but do at the switch itself. Additionally I am now in a no start situation as stated before. It turns over and fires but will not remain running when started is disengaged. I have double checked the connections at the ignition switch, kill lanyard, relay solenoid, starter solenoid, and coil. additionally I have check connection at shift interupter and jiggled the throttle/shifter around to insure its not a nuteral safety issue. I traced the harness as best as I could and didnt see an issue. Until I attempted to start without purple / yellow on starter solenoid it would start and run. Now it's a no start situation.... I'm beyond stumped !!

You have to find where the power stops and fix it. Somewhere between the switch and the coil the power stops. It's not the slave solenoid, has nothing to do with the ignition. I'm thinking you have more than one problem here. So lets fix one, then the other.
You need to test with a meter or a test light, not just looking at it. If you use a test light, touch it on the battery first so you know how bright it should be. Then start at the ign. switch. to the kill switch, any wire connectors. There is also a resistor wire on the engine that could be bad. If you have an electric choke, do you have power to it with the key in the run position?
The purple/yellow wire only puts power to the coil when the engine is cranking. That is why it starts, then stops.

Re: Motor Starts but won't shut off

I have checked these several times but another issue may have emerged. I'm out of time for the moment but will continue my search as soon as possible. If you could post any other ideas concering the no kill situation from before that would be great so I can check when I'm able. Knowing it's a Holiday weekend and you might be unavailable.
Hope to talk soon and thank you for all you help up to this point.

If you don't have power to the coil with the ignition switch in the run position, then you have a problem and I don't care if you checked them a thousand times. You don't have power now.

Do you have ability to "hotwire" the engine AT the engine with the main harness disconnected? Without frying something else? This will isolate the problem between engine vs dash.
Don't put 12volts directly to the points.

I'm brave but not that brave. I have discovered I have a battery bleed problem as well. Battery ran down signifacantly last night. Currently have unhooked and charging. Gonna allow it to charge for awhile. To simplify tests I bought a test light last night vs using multimeter. Once I have a decent charge I will start again from scratch. Testing all circuits starting at the helm and working toward the engine compartment.

Below are the wiring diagrams for what you are working on. I hope.
They should help you get the wiring straightened out.
One note on the inst. panel wiring diagram. The B and the I are reversed in the drawing.
The B should be the Red/purple wire from the Battery
The I should be the purple wire for the Ignition.

Don S,

Thanks for all the advice and wire diagrams. I slept on the problem and tackled it again this morning. Starting from the Helm switch and working backwards...Didn't make it far as I discovered the connection on the kill lanyard had become loose... This imediatly corrected the start and run problem. Boat still would not turn off so I rolled with a hunch based on a previous like problem and off to my local NAPA dealer for a new starter solenoid.... Installed and PRESTO !!!! All is well and I shall be headed to the lake shortly.... Thank you for all your help and advice !!! Hope you have a GREAT Memorial weekend

Yeah, fighting 2 problems at the same time can be a pain sometimes.
Had your kill switch wire not been a problem, removing the Purple yellow wire from the solenoid would have shown you the solenoid was the problem.
