just put 130 hp honda on 21' al flat bottom boat. i have a 5 ft fan tail an i can not lock motor up for travel because it will hit the fan tail on the front of motor. will a motor support or stern saver be just as good as road lock? i kinda think motor should b raised which might let the motor lock up for road travel. seems 2 spray a lot of water when trimmed out. the antiventilation plater is pretty deep in water. any idea how u can tell if motor is set at right height on transom. i can go up another hole up which i will try if nothin else.
thankx
bobby

Re: motor support or stern saver

hello, a stern/transom saver will be better than letting the motor hold itself up by a lever near the hinge. the engine height might be a little tricky, usually determined by trial/error or advice from someone with a boat like yours. i think most people start with the cavitation plate 1/2" below hull. if you really want to 'tune' the proper height of the engine(for more speed), you might want to run a search on jackplates.
:D

but i was thinking it would spray more water the higher the engine sat...

Rspbobby
A transom saver in much better than locking motor in up position. Make sure have a good streach strap on both ends. If it has enough clearance to ground with engine down even better, but most have to be raised.
Motor height should be set with cavitation plate 1 inch below the hull to start. Then take it out on a test run and trim motor out for best speed. Now make some hard turns in both directions. Any slippiage and it is too high. Another thing I like to do is also watch water pressure or tell tail durning turn to make sure water pump deep enough.
