Looking for advice...I have a 83 or 84 ( not quite sure) force 125 . Not enough power for me and my 83 16 foot Fiberglas monarch . I've come across a 94 force 150. Anyone know if there would be a big difference in power and fuel economy? As my boat is a pig on fuel. Also would it be much heavier than the 125

i can't imagine it would make that much difference - maybe 5 mph tops. I hear the 150's are a little harder to start b/c 1 more cylinder to turn over. that being said we have a 18 and 19 foot boat both with force 125's and no issues pushing them - is your 16' that heavy ? Have you tried a lower pitch prop ?

I'm guessing either the 125 is really tired..... or your boat is water logged and is very heavy......or the motor is not setup correctly and is plowing........got any pics of boat?

Could very well be plowing...I had the trim fixed at a shop here cause it never worked since I bought the boat 3 years ago. Anyway it won't trip up if I'm moving...if I trim it up not moving it slams down when I punch it . Also takes about 5 secs till it will lift the motor ( moving slow) Could that be air lock?

Could be leaking in the main trim ram.

First off: I would guess the 150 is about 50-75pounds heavier than the 125. You have one more cylinder and crank and the exhaust cover is way more massive to accommodate the tuned ports. The cowl is way bigger too. Fuel usage: At full throttle expect to use about 15 gallons per hour.

HOWEVER: The `150 WILL make the 125 look sick. I never liked the 5 cylinder 150---until I bought one. It converted me. I had a 125 on my 21 foot cuddy. It topped out at 33 MPH. The 150 will top out at 41-43 MPH. A significant difference and hole shot is much faster.

Now, to your trim. While you are trying to repair the trim, you can put two 2 or 3 inch long 1/2 inch diameter bolts through the approximate correct holes in the transom clamps. Use a 1/2 inch coupler--looks like a 2 inch long nut-- on the inside of the clamps. This will keep the engine from dropping all the way while running. At least that way you can see top speed without plowing.

If the engine pushes the trim ram all the way in while under power, the check valve probably has a bad O-ring. Typically the front check valve goes bad before the rear. Thus, if you have the pump with the screw-in check valves, you can usually swap the rear to the front and the trim will work again for a while. Later on, you can replace the tiny O-rings.

I suspect though, from the age of your 125 white Force-- 85-86- I think 84 was still Chrysler. Anyway, I suspect that the pump has check valves held in by internal circlips. These valves are not repairable and I don't know where to buy replacements. Your best bet would be to buy another complete pump.

Since both trim and tilt cylinders are on the same hydraulic circuit, IF the tilt cylinder has a bad piston O-ring, the engine will also drop like a rock. To test for this, you block the port to the trim cylinder and raise the engine. If it drops quickly, then there is a good chance that the tilt cylinder O-ring is bad.

Re: Motor upgrade

In the factory manual there are steps to determine what's wrong with the T/T
If your motors really hard on the gas? Make sure the prop's the right one.
You should have? maybe? a 19p
Take it for a ride and see how many RPM's the motor hits.
You'll have to do this after the T/T is fixed.
Trimmed up and running right your motor should hit about 53-5500 rpm's.
I tried a prop change. It has 17p and I wanted "more" I got more when I changed to a 19p.
I got about 3mph and fuel usage went up about 20%more.

Re: Motor upgrade

It used to run around 40-43 rpm with the original 4 blade prop that came with the boat. I believe it is a 17 that I put on now it revs around 50-55. I was worried of over reving .

Re: Motor upgrade

They didn't use a 4 blade as OEM.
The 4 must be an aftermarket.
If the 17 gets 50-5500 use it.
Running at full throttle all the time uses way more fuel than a steady 4200.
I run 4200 and get 2.3 mpg. Not too bad for twin motors.
