I need to swap out a couple of motors-
A 1981 115 Johnson & a 1986 110 Johnson -
Can three strong men pick up & carry (and "handle") them 30' from one boat to the other or am i going to need a hoist of some sort?
Thanks :)

300 lbs. The problem is how to grab a hold of it.
I've only used a block and tackle on a tree with the big motors.

Re: Motor Weight

Wheel barrel or hand truck. Very difficult to carry due to them being out of balance (top heavy) and compact.

Re: Motor Weight

I was thinking short chain on the "lift ring" on the motor with pipe with one on either end of ( 2" sch 40 ) pipe & the 3rd on the lower end to steady

Dont really have a proper tree branch & both boats are on gravel/grass about 30' motor to motor but i can get them much closer -

Re: Motor Weight

I recommend you drop the gearcase to lighten them up. Now build a motor stand out of scrap 2X lumber, that you can put a hand truck under, and wheel 'em around.

That is a option, the 115 needs a WP anyway

Re: Motor Weight

Id say that two guys on the cowl, and one on the LU....

as long as the colw dont pop off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek:

I have put two different V4 into my pick up truck myself...but it can be a logistic head ache,

and I have put a 115 hp V4 yamaha ( also about 315 lbs I think) inot my truck with the help of another guy...it was lamost as bad as alone..

one guy could stand the motor up on a hand truckl and strap it in and wheel it all over the place...the trick is being to secure the hand truck while you leverage the motor on to it.....

good luck

Re: Motor Weight

if you have ZERO options, i will say yes 3 strong guys can carry a 115.me and a buddy took a 90 evinrude off the back of my boat and carried it into the garage about 15 feet or so by hand power alone.not really reccomended for the faint of heart!im going to buy a engine crane for next time and im planning on installing larger wheels on it ,lets say 4 or 6 inch so i can wheel it around the yard and garage without any hassle.i now play with about 10 engines of various sizes so the crane will come in really handy and it folds up for storage.im getting too old to lug motors by hand anymore, lol.

Re: Motor Weight

If you wanted it to be somewhat safe, figure on a long pipe, that can support 300 or so lbs, and four guys to lift, a fifth to unbolt, and you best have a place to rest the motor once its off.

I've done a few by myself, but not by choice. Its enough weight to really hurt yourself with and dropping a skeg on a toe would almost certainly mean amputation.

They do seem to weigh less when standing up, lay it down there there's even less places to grab. The pan really doesn't give you an area to grab, and the cover won't stay on that way. Once it's off, it can be a three man lift, two on the power head end with a pipe on the lift bracket, and one on the lower unit.

Newer motors lost that lift bracket, you need a flywheel puller bolted to the motor with an eye bolt attached to lift those after about 1987.

Re: Motor Weight

You can almost eliminate the lifting of the motors. Unbolt everything and just have the motor hanging on the transom. Have 2 people steady it while someone raises the bow nad move the boat out of the way. Then just lay over on a handtruck or something. Installation is opposite.

I have no way to get to any trees in my yard. Last one I did was by myself so I ended up running a 4 x 6 across the header of my garage. Cut a hole through the header plate and ran a chain through there and used a come a long. Worked good.
