Motor will not start

I recently purchased a boat with a 1987 100hp Mariner engine. The engine has not been started in a couple of years. I just replaced the ignition switch and when I attemped to start the motor, it would turn over but not run. I tried a few more times but stoped when I found that the negative terminal on the battery was too hot to touch. I also noticed the starter seemed overly hot. What steps should I take to get this motor running properly again?

before you try to start it, you should replace the waterpump and thermostats (if equipped) and check the compression.

squirting some oil in the plugholes wouldnt hurt either....

nothing worse than finding a great motor at a garage sale and taking it home only to blow it up due to lack of pre-maintance

captail LC - It is normal for the starter to get hot during use. It is not normal for the negative terminal or cable to get hot! Heat means resistance. I recommend you check for a dirty battery connection or rotted cable.

PS let the starter cool off when it is hot. That way you will not have to buy a new one!

Re: Motor will not start

I took off the plastic cover over top of the starter and found that the starter would stay engaged and not drop back down after attempting to start it. I am going to have the starter rebuilt and hopefully that will take care of the problem.
