Motor won't start, no spark

I have a 1959 "fat 50" that ran great last year, when to hook up the battery and accidentally connected the wire from the starter solenoid to the negative terminal (D'Oh). It melted the ground (i think) going to the key, its a magneto, I replaced the wire, the battery. The engine now turns over but has no spark. The coil is slightly budged and cracking, but I'm not sure if it was that way before or not. I don't really want to drop the $200 on a coil that may or may not fix the problem. Is there anything else I could try or some how test the coil?

If you can find a shop that has a ---------MERC-O-TRONIC----ignition analyzer , they can test your coil.------Merc-o-tronic is a brand name and noting to do with Mercury motors.

Skrew, That ign system only has 2 sets of points, one condenser and a coil. Replace the condenser and clean the points. Check the ign wires to make sure they do nit short out. Check for spark at the brass coil button. With a spin on the distributor pulley, you should get zapped by the spark. If not, the only thing left is the coil. If you have spark at the coil, but not at the plugs, it could be the rotor. They crack and develop a short to the distributor shaft.

If that coil is cracked, have it tested before you do anything. My guess is it's bad along with other things. You have to take it to a shop that has a load tester. The ohmmeter trick won't work here.
