Mounting a transducer on my Wellcraft?

I just purchased a 1999 19' Wellcraft CC from a non fishing friend. Since he never used the boat for anything but skiing he never had a fishfinder on it. I had two fishfinders on my other boat so I removed one to put on the Wellcraft. Now for the problem. I was fixing to mount it on my transom when I realized the boat has a stepped hull so if I mount it on the transom when the boat gets up on plane it will be out of the water. The step in the hull is only about 3 inches so there is not room to mount the bracket on the step without the transducer being an inch or so below the hull. I thought about shooting through the hull but would rather mount it outside. I Emailed Wellcraft to see if they had a suggested location but got no answer. Anybody ever faced this problem? What did you do and how did it work?

I would mount it through hull, looks like your only choice, it will create the exact same performance , use epoxy though.

Thanks Magic,<br /> I just got a reply today from Wellcraft they said on that model when they mounted them they used a shoot through the hull mount at the rear of the bilge compartment. Guess that is what I will do.

I'm not sure where the end of the bilge compartment is on your boat but what you need to do is make sure its mounted just in front of the step. Before you mount it be sure to survey the hull bottom forward of the point where you intend to place the transducer (your check the outside of the hull, the transducer is mounted on the inside) to avoid strakes or any fittings that may be directly forward of the mounting point. The reason for that is that disturbed water outside of the hull will interfere with even an in-hull mounted transducer.
