Mounting Johnson Ship Master controls

I have a 1958 Johnson 18hp with the standard Ship Master controls. Rehabing an old Feathercraft. I see some attached the controls directly to the side wall of the boat. Others have a mounting bracket.

Have not see much availalbe for brackets. How essential are they? Are they aftermarket or were they original equipment? Thanks!
