I have a '62 16.5 foot fiberglass runabout that is fitted with a '61 Merc 80 hp outboard. The hull isnt very deep and is streamlined well. With two passengers the weight of the boat is around 1000 pounds. I have heard that the engine weighs around 300 or so but I dont know. The engine is fitted with a speedmaster l/u with a ratio of 1:1 and a huge 17 pitch brass prop. The engine turns 4500. What kind of speed can be expected from this rig?

Hey oldboatsal,<br />The formula for computing speed is: Prop pitch x rpm div. by gear ratio div. by 1056 so it looks like you're running about 72 mph LESS prop slip which can range anywhere but it looks like you're getting with the program.<br /><br />Remember, dry side up, wet side down.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

I don't know anything about old mercs, but are you sure you have a 1:1 gear ratio ?!? (Mine is 1.9:1) If so, you ought to have a real rocket on your hands....<br /><br />Here's the math:<br /><br />prop pitch of 17" = 17" travel through water per rotation of prop (this is notional, I'll allow for slip later)<br /><br />1 mile = 5300 feet = 63600 inches<br /><br />63600/17 = 1 mile per 3741 prop rotations <br /><br />no compensation for gear ratio of 1:1 so <br />4500 rpm/3741 rpm = 1.203 miles per minute and so for 60 minutes = 72.18 mph.<br /><br />Now deduct slippage, which is the amount by which the drag caused by a boat hull prevents the prop from achieving maximum efficiency. For most planer hull boats under 20' it should be between 10 and 20%. Assume 20% and you should be moving at 57 mph at 4500 rpm. Assume 10% slip and it should 64.9 mph.<br /><br />Either way if your shallow v early 60's boat does this speed, hang on tight and avoid wakes if you want to stay out of orbit! If it doesn't go so fast you are afraid for your life then I suspect your quoted gear ratio is wrong (and I also wonder if 4500 rpm is not too low for the motor's optimum power range but that's for a merc guy to say).

Jeepers, while I'm offline dutifully writing out the math Hooty just scooped me with the answer. At least our #'s agree. Hooty, would you go that fast in a '62?

I would have to guess from using a gps on a similar craft today that you might be able to get attain speeds close to 40mph...maybe somewhere's between 30-37mph depending on load and condition of hull and a vast number of other variables...just a Thought

The lower unit is in fact 1:1 ratio. I tested it with the l/u off on it's side. I put a mark on both shafts with a sharpie marker and spun the drive shaft one full turn. The prop shaft was in the same exact spot that it was when I started. So as the drive shaft turns one turn, the prop shaft turns one turn...1:1 ratio

Borrow a GPS and use that to measure. No arguements no question. If you have a 1:1 ratio and a 17" prop I would expect your boat will plane off VERY slowly.<br /><br />Bob
