The engine serial number is owo39501
Year of manufacture is 2004.
When it vapor locks, can I release the vapor at the schrader valve located between the two fuel rails?

Yes, use a rag to catch the gas that does spit out. Keep in mind from what I'm hearing I do believe your dealing with vapor lock.

+ 1 and this step may help with your testing to see if it is.

Here's your correct engine parts catalog and your engine would have the check valve already in place...You'll just need to locate it's location. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectDocs.asp?doc_nbr=884717

If it is vapor lock than adding a inline fuel pump before the filter like the Fuel Filter and Boost Pump(BRAVO) would be another way to help with the problem though Merc made a kit for it. Search Mercruiser fuel booster pump kit online.
