I also would like to add that Carpenter bees dig in wood, Bumble bees are the fun kind when they are too fat to fly and you can hit them with baseball bats :D

Seagulls are annoying as well.

JAZZ ;)

Yep, I definitely have done battles with many yellow jacket nests. I wish I had a electronic picture of what must have been a bald-faced hornet nest. It was built under the eve of my friend's cabin. The whole thing was enclosed except for a hole in the bottom. The bottom was slightly curved so the hole entrance was horizontal. It was like a little shuttle bay. They had abandoned the nest.

2 years ago, I ran into a nest of bumble bees in my carriage house. They made a nest in an old coat that was in there. They had round balls of somthing in there that looked like cocoons.

1. What are those wasps with the red bodies and black wings called?

2. Also what are those bees that live in the ground that are black and white and about 1- 1 1/2" long called? They look very nasty and I dont like them. Sometimes I see them carry small critters into thier holes, like spiders and caterpillars and stuff like that.

Re: Mud Dauber's !!!

after hearing jasonj info on developing more of a chance for allergic reaction instead of tolerance, it made me queasy... funny how the mind works. ;)
i say this because i've never been too scared of bees, but do know when to run. back in high school, i sold snow cones in the summer. i got paid :D by some other workers to fill up their jugs with syrup, at the tanks. the syrup tanks had water hoses on spigots, and the honeybees would be on them like fur coats. i learned from the owner how to gently brush them off, to use the hoses.
i thought just the opposite of what jasonj said about stings, and have removed the yjacket nests near my backyard (i have a small child).
after reading that info on allergic reactions, i think of @ 10yrs ago when i got stung by yjackets 11x on the back with several right on the backbone. i was mowing, it was very hot (90+), i was sweaty & had my shirt off. it hurt so bad i felt queasy and had to go home and lay down.

when we moved where we are now, some construction workers got stung at the edge of the yard. i watched the area until i found the hole in the grnd. that night i doused with gasoline, and lit it. when i dug it up the next day the nest was @ like a basketball! the other 2 i found were smaller, like softballs.
had to remove 2 hornet nests from my house last yr, both @ softball size. got them with hornet killer, at night. one on the front eaves, one under the power meter! hehehe
had a bumblebee nest in a small birdhouse (wren) under my tall deck. got it with liquid insecticide, dursban i think.
had to remove @ 10 dauber nests when moving in, but none since.
haven't had much trouble with carpenter bees, maybe seen 3 or 4. maybe being near a lake makes a diff? when just 20mi away, they made my fence posts look like swiss cheese. but then i didn't have any birdhouses over there... hmmm

When I worked in construction rental we used to have them build their nests in the exhaust of the smaller machines and it would drive the new guys nuts trying to figure out why they would not stay running...

Look on the Bright side...they will run off un-invited guests and you will never run out of fish bait!
