That is the mullet we use for bait. This is a picture of what we also call mullet, sea mullet, roundhead, northern kingfish, atlantic kingfish (not king mac.) or whiting. As I stated, was just taking a guess.

Hey fishman...that fish we have down here. They run in the surf or very close to the beaches and are a regular fare of the kids or tourists that fish our beaches. We call them "whiting". They are a member of the drum family, of which we have several different versions.
Only difference I can see is the stripes on your fish are not on ours, but everything else seems the same. Also, I hear the netters usedto round them up by the boatload as they were close in and easy to trap against the beaches. Thankfully, we banned the nets in inshore waters back in '96 and the fishery has rebounded very well.

Oh.... ok. I got it now. Not being a big fisherman myself I clicked on this thread expecting something completely different. More along the lines of Billy Ray Cyrus style.. lol.

as a kid, i had a friend, from a very large family. they would go to the beachs, cove, and sane the beach, they ate everything they caught. they had a 200 ft net, and would walk it out, head deep then circle around, then pull the net to shore.

Whiting are good eating fish, especially in soup. Mullet, though, I have never eaten.

We can take up to 100 pounds per day of them here in Louisiana. If had a cast net this afternoon, while fishing between Chef Pass & the Rigolettes, I would have had my hundred pounds for sure! The darn things kept surrounding my boat while schooling on the surface - they were so thick that it actually got annoying!

I like smoked mullet. I think it's the only fish in the gulf that has a gizzard?

Brine?, well maybe we just don't know how to do it down here. That's the beauty of the Internet. But with Grouper, Mackerel, Red Drum, Speckled Trout, and Mangrove Snappers all over our waters, it better be good.

Thats' why we don't eat them in Puerto Rico. Why eat them when you have so many Mackarel,Red snapper... etc.
