Multiple questions about my new 81 20hp merc

Hi everyone, I'm new to outboards but a motorhead at heart. First off, I'm going on an extended river trip where my motor will be depended on to save us some time rowing and to blast me downriver during windy conditions. Its not a matter of life or death if the engine quits, but it would be mighty inconvenient. I have a repair manual that I've started to go through. What kind of repair kit would you bring for this motor. what are some of its common issues it might have?<br /> The motor has a 10" 9 pitch prop, is there a smaller diameter that would work? Should there be a fuel filter in line with the primer bulb? and what purpose does the smaal steel rod that goes from the tilt hooks to the lower unit serve. <br />thanks<br />Rob<br />heading to green river utah anyone ever motored from there to Moab? annual friendship cruise?

I'd take an extra prop for sure. I believe the rod you are refering to is what causes the engine to lock down when in reverse. I've been running small outboards for 20 plus years and I've never run an inline fuel filter..Since you're going to be on an extended trip I'd take a set of spark plugs and possibly a fuel pump diaphram just in case. Some of these other guys might shoot holes all in what I'm telling you but an extra prop, spark plugs and a fuel pump diaphram would definately make the trip with me.

I agree with efhenry. Also take a spare cotter pin just in case you have to put the prop back on. In line fuel filter is ok. I prefer the glass type from your local auto parts store. Around $10.00. You can replace the cartridge in these and it makes it easy to see whats going on in the fuel supply.Also it will aid in seeing you draw in air to fuel system. pre gap your plugs and take a spark plug socket of some kind. And last but not least. Take your phone with you if you have a cell, file a float plan to let someone know when you should be getting back. Where you are going.and when you will return.As a marine resque squad member, I must say that the last advice was the best. Safe boating.<br />Randycc58
