The "SL' could be 'EL' which is electric start with long shaft leg (20").

That serial number is for a 1970 4 cyl 650 (65hp).

Re: my 1970 mercury model question

the antiventilation plate is flush with the bottom of the boat, from the antiventilation plate to propeller is about 14 inches under the boat. does that mean its longshaft?? the motor is probaly a pig on gas ? it is electric start. the model chart does not have an E in it, just S&L. i would just assume given it is 65hp that electric start would be a give in, would not want to hand crank !! thanks again this site is really helping me understand alot , QUICKLY !!! btw the boat is a 1971 glastron v156 sportster. it could be original boat/motor.
