Re: My 1972 65 hp died while running.

I can't say thank you enough to everyone out there who has offered advice. I have been working on cars and small engines for many years now, but these outboards offer all kinds of new challenges. I thought I had a great selection of tools.I guess I have everything except what I need to work on outboards. That's ok, I'll have to fix that problem too!

Keep us updated. If you end up needing to test the stator and/or timer base, I can post some ohms tests that you can do with a simple multimeter.

Did anyone suggest he check for a blown fuse in the wiring harness? That happens and shuts everything down also.

L.A. WISE- I did check the fuse in the harness. The one I found was good. I am not sure if there are more in the harness. I will check.
JAY- If you have any test I can run witha multimeter, I would love t know about them, thanks.

Re: My 1972 65 hp died while running.

Can anybody out there tell me what the diode lead assembly is used for, what does it do? I just found a few listed on E-Bay, and one was listed as a powerpack. I was wondering if they were related/ connected in any way.

Re: My 1972 65 hp died while running.

Here are the tests for the timer base ....

Checking Sensor Coil

a. Disconnect sensor coil leads from power pack terminals #8, #9, #10 and #11 (common lead). Connect ohmmeter (LO ohms scale) to each sensor coil lead (white with black stripe). Connect other ohmmeter lead to the common lead (black with white stripe). Meter should read 8.5, plus or minus 1 ohm.

b. With sensor leads still disconnected from power pack, connect ohmmeter (HI ohms scale) alternately between each sensor lead and ground. Infinity reading indicates good sensor. Zero reading indicates leads or sensor coil is shorted to ground and should be replaced.

c. The sensor coil and timer base are serviced as a unit.

Note: Power pack terminal 1 - 6 are on the left side, facing it.

And now for the stator ...

Checking Charge Coils

a. Disconnect charge coil lead. Connect ohmmeter (HI ohms scale) to charge coil lead (brown) from power pack terminal 4 and brown/orange lead from terminal 5. Meter should read 900 ohms, plus or minus 30 ohms.

b. Check for frayed or broken leads.

c. Charge coils are part of the stator and can not be serviced separately.

Note: Power pack terminals 7-12 are on the right side, facing it.

Re: My 1972 65 hp died while running.

One thing that I forgot to mention - power pack terminal #7 has nothing attached to it. There is a small rubber plug (half moon shape) that provides a water seal. Watch that you don't lose it, when you remove the cover.

Be careful with the wire terminations too - they are not standard items. The necks on them are longer than the ones that you would buy at an electrical supply. You can get new ones, but you will have to buy them from a BRP/Evinrude dealer.

SHE LIVES!!!! After the rectifier came in, and was installed, I tested the stator. All good. I went ahead and replaced the powerpack, turned the key, and she fired right up. Thanks again to everyone out there who offered advice and help. This sight is awesome.

Good deal! I kinda figured it was the powerpack - when its not the key switch and none of the ignition circuits are providing "fire," that's usually what it is.
