well i replaced the gasket on the riser when i had the head and intake off, is that where the water could be draining from,or is it acully coming up through there? also, dwell spec was 28-34, and mine is set to 32. in regards to the fuel hose, there is no fuel returning to the pump through it, should there be?

when you had the head off did you notice is any piston top was really clean? it`s a sign of water getting into a cylinder.did any of the plugs look really white at the tip? another sign of water.try running the engine, shut it down ,let it sit a bit,and drain the manifold/riser , remove riser and see if manifold is wet inside, sure sign of a leaker.a bad riser dosent get water into the oil all the time just takes out a cylinder.

Re: My 3.0 mercruiser sucks

well guys, bruce said it best, common sense is not common, it took another set of eyes to see it, but my dad pointed out that the rotation of my dist was wrong. runs like a champ now. but i ran it a little bit without the muffs on and i destroyed my impeller in the lower unit. when i was changing it out i found the steel pieces of the shutter inside the hose between the lower unit and the boat itself. when i went to the parts store i got a new one, but im not sure where it goes, and the clymer manual says nothing about it for my motor. so my question is, does anyone know where i need to put this, and could this explain the water in my oil? also, is there any way to quiet these things down, i thought i had an exhaust leak, but now i see that those 2 holes lead directly to the exhaust. i know newer boats have mufflers, but do i have any options with this?

Before you do anything else to your engine and drive, you need two different manuals. One for the drive, trim&tilt, transom shield etc. which has a free online version. Here's the link.
Service Manual #6

You also need manual #10 for your engine. Check ebay or order a new one, but get one.
And loose that Clymers manual ...........
Then, start reading and studying BEFORE you try to do the work.
