i bought a '63 starcraft jet, 15' aluminum boat, and other than the HIN on the title, there is not one on the boat. i found the little metal tag with the model, max horsepower, serial no. on it, but cant find the HIN on the boat. is this going to cause legal problems? if so, who should i talk to? thanks, mike.

Re: my boat has no HIN...

Is it a title, or a registration card?

I know here, boats under 16' don't need a title. If it were the title, I would think it should have the serial number on it, and you could check that.

Does the length/description and all that match up otherwise with the boat?

I don't think it should be a problem though, because when you go to register it, I don't know why it would matter if the hull ID was physically on the boat or not.

Re: my boat has no HIN...

the boat is a 1963, HIN's were not required until 1972, but it is best to engrave or atleast put a sticker with the HIN, on the title, on the outside upper starboard side of the transom. the earlier boats, the states just issue the boat a state HIN, not manufacturer HIN.

Oh, my mistake. I thought you were talking about the registration number, (like the MN 6254LD for example.)

Re: my boat has no HIN...

the numbers were suppose to be permanently attached by who ever registered it after 1972. the reason is so it can be identified, and theft. all boat are now suppose to have the HIN on them. take the number off the title. attach it to the starboard out side of the transom.

look at this. http://nysparks.state.ny.us/boating/docs/hin_app.pdf

Look under the gunrails, and dash if it has one. If it has seats might be under there.

If not they will issue you at the dmv a sticker.

Re: my boat has no HIN...

ok, just to be sure i understand, my pre '72 boat was, at one time, issued a HIN number, because there is one on the title, but not on the boat. so does that mean i should make a little plate with the title's HIN number and put it on my boat, or should i (if i can) get a new HIN number? if i need a new one, is that the coast guards job or the dept. of game and fisheries of VA? thanks for all the info, mike.

Re: my boat has no HIN...

I've got a 1970 Wilker (Canadian made) boat. Again there is no HIN for that year but I did find a serial number "molded" into the transom inside the splashwell. It is simply a 5 digit number hand written on the plywood under the fiberglass. There was no gelcoat over the number so it is visible thru the fiberglass.

How much plainer can i make this. "take the number off the title. attach it to the starboard out side of the transom."

Re: my boat has no HIN...

As TD has said, you already have a HIN - its on your paperwork. Doublecheck that paperwork to make sure it matches the boat, in regard to make, model, length, etc. If all checks out, permanently affix the HIN to the upper transom on your boat, on the starboard side.

I am offering the advice to doublecheck the paperwork against what your boat appears to be, because there are quite a few "pre-1972 boats" (the ones that didn't have a HIN embosssed in the transom at the factory) with bogus paperwork.
