my boat is a water trap... is yours??

In tearing apart my mushy bowrider, I discovered that the ski compartment and the subfloor gas tank compartment are both sealed and do not alow water to drain towards the back of the boat. Why would anybody think that it is a good idea to trap water in a boat??? Also, the center stringers do not go all the way to the front of the boat. There is about a 1ft section that is left open so that all of the water trapped in the sealed ski compartment can splash into the section b/t the center and the outer stringers, again, where it is trapped. It is no wonder my boat is rotted... Anyone else run into this kind of stuff??

I would classify mine more of a 'sponge' than a water trap. Wet floatation foam in sealed compartments that just seem to soak up the water. (I realize that they're supposed to be sealed.)

But...I guess that's to be expected when the boat wasn't covered the entire time it was owned. (Until I got it this summer...22 years in the rain & snow.)

Mine doesnt have any foam... Other than some "great stuff" that someone sprayed in holes that they drilled in the deck to "cure" a soft spot... Makes me wonder what kind of person was hired to design some of these boats.

My MFG Gypsy 15 was a water trap. Very similar to yours. There was no place for water under the deck to go. Before I get ready to button the floor up, I will be building drainage into it. There are a couple of areas that simply due to their shape hold water. I'm going to fill them to relieve that situation. I also find it hard to believe that some manufacturers didn't engineer full drainage into their designs.

same here.

with some fairly minor re-designs like that, making it last longer than the manufacturer did will be pretty easy.

these types of obvious design failures by manufacturers makes me uncertain about the workmanship and engineering of the rest of the boat.
