Re: My Boat Pushes at Full Speed

Jason,

I would describe it blowing out, rather than cavitating. When I watch it, you can see the water being pushed back, kind of like a jet drive. Is the cavitation plate, just above the prop????? If so, then it is about 1" below the very bottom of the vee on the transom.

The 90HP is a 6 cylinder and it seem like I have the motor trimmed 3/4 way down. When this usally happens, I trim it down slightly, but then the bow goes down into the water, which makes it not plane right.

Maybe I just down't have the right combination.

I never thought I say this, but you have too much hp on that boat. Your not going to get it to handle correctly, trimmed or not, for two reasons:
1. The 90hp V6 mercury from 1980 is over 100 lbs heavier than the 50.
2. The fury has an extremely shallow V, and more of a D shaped hull. The "pushing" your feeling is because with all that weight in back and no real wedge cutting the water your not going to be able to truly control where the boat is going. You're skidding on top of the water, not cutting through it.

Yep, Envy is right on this one. I had an early 60s 17 footer that was basically flat at the back with a semi V towards the front. I put an 85 horse motor on it, it had no data plate but the theoretical horsepower limit was 90 based on that max horsepower formula. Anyway, I had replaced a 50 horsepower motor with that 85 horse motor, and it was plenty faster, and went in a stright line fine, but you went to turn at any kind of speed and the back would slide out very easily. I had it come around on me and almost flip, causing a tremendous pucker factor to occur.

Yep, too much power. You will either have to be cautious, get a new motor, of find a better hull for the motor you have. Good luck...
