My carb won't quit leaking!!

I have a 1960 3hp Johnson Model JW-16. It hadn't been ran in a couple of years so I just rebiult the carb. It Runs great now, but I can't get the carb to quit leaking on the back side of the carb between the float bowl and main carb body. I've tried reseating it several times and have even resorted to some gasket sealer for carbs. The gasket that came with kit, seams to be a bit large but all the holes line up. Does anyone have any ideas?

I had that problem whith a 3.5 hp sears I put a filter on fule line to make sure no partical was getting in. To check my engine I took off the bowl and manually with gas in the tank moved my float up and make sure that it sealed wery gentle do not put to much pressure on the neddle seal and the gas should stop coming out if not it's a seal problem with the neddle valve on the float. If gas stops then your float might need adjusting bend so that it will be in the right place to move the neddle on the float and seal to keep gas from coming in like it suppose to be when the gas gets at a certain level.

Are you saying that the gas shouldn't even be deep enough in the bowl to be able to leak out of the gasket?

The float needs to be adjusted so it is parallel with the bowl mating surface when the carburator is turned upside down. The float is normally all below the gasket, so I guess if the engine is level, the gasket should do nothing. I don't know if this is related to your problems. I take it you've examined the mating surfaces and gasket for nicks, etc.<br />Good luck!

So the float should be even ,when full of gas,with the gasket that is between the bowl and body?

Exactly. So you see my point (EDIT: actually, MadeCoolCom's point ) about the gas being down in the bowl when the engine is level. But I don't see why it would leak at the back, since the vent on that carburator is at the front. That is unless it was running along the gasket line and dripping back there from gravity.

Sounds like the gasket is to big. Or you didn't have a clean area for the gasket. You might want to try and make a gasket. Or see if the shop has another gasket for your model maybe there are two different of types of carburetors you your engine. If the gasket that you had fit than maybe you have a nick in the bowl where the gasket goes this is keeping from fitting tight like it should fix together with the gasket and the carburetor. Make sure they or nicks in where the gasket goes.

I think you might have clean your area where your gasket goes. Make sure there are no nicks in it that might be preventing it from sealing good.

"There Bugs in this message board" are maybe bugs in my computer. I kept getting a error message when I tried to post a message so I didn't think it was working It said to repost this message error than in the cgi bin line something. So I kept trying sorry for the repeated posts. The last time I checked I reloaded my browser and I did't see any of my messages so I posted another one.
