Haven't decided on the color scheme yet but will be starting off with Autobody Master Professional Etch Fill & catalyst for the bare aluminum.

I sacrificed a glasser this year so am really looking for some mercy. I was used to heavy snow falls and frigid temps when I lived in the Keewenaw but we usually don't have winters like that down here.

With the Chief unscathed and your house cold....but undamaged and a heated shop to paint in - looks like you got your mercy. Look forward to watching the '72 with a new dress on.

The thumb is getting pretty crowded w/ all these Chieftain builds. Motivation perhaps:

another ad that's an interesting window into changed psychology.....the obvious implication is that you're going there from Fla. somehow i can't see any boat company nowadays even hinting that their 22' boat will make it across that many miles of open ocean, due to liability fears.

Re: My Chieftan project

Got quite a bit of work done on the Chief today. Worked on the final sanding and stripping some paint off with lacquer thinner and scotch brite pads. With access to the mig with spool gun I was able to weld in the holes that were in the top panel over the transom and grind them flush. We took a lunch break and stopped by his local paint supplier and went through many color chips but think I found the color combos I was looking for. Got back to the shop and laid some tape lines on the hull for the different colors. Not 100% final on the exact colors but pretty darn close. Got to go do some welding for a buddy tomorrow morning then will go back and continue. My inspiration level has risen considerably.

When the front cabin windows were pulled my buddy was laughing. Inside one of the window frame strips he seen this orange cord between it and the window............someone used a cut off piece of extension cord to support and fill the void.....gotta love it. Will put pic up tomorrow as I left my camera in the shop.

So come on man spill on the paint colors and scheme already.

I love paint scrapping and sanding! In fact I can't wait to get inside my Chief and start in.

Willy, do you suppose it fed the windshield wipers? - Grandad

No Grandad, this cord was in the front cabin windows. The wiper is attached to the top windshield and all wiring accounted for on it. Looked like they used it to fill the void probably cause they cut the windshield too short to fill the framing.

Well it was an "extension" cord wasn't it? - Grandad

That right there is funny. LMAO

Glad to see you got a warm place to work. The Mitt has been mighty cold this winter. After that -20 degree spell 30 is downright balmy.

Looking forward to pics. My least favorite ritual of tin: stripping paint, most favorite PAINT! Can't wait, pics, pics, pics.

You got that right Grandad :D

Yea Don, ole man winter has a grip on us this year. Another cold blast for this week. Good new for the ice fishermen as there is plenty of ice. Will get some pics when I get back down to the shop. We want to get her situated on the lift to facilitate the painting.

Re: My Chieftan project

Ok, time to appease the angry mob......pics as requested and required:

This is a shot of the extension cord that was used to space the cabin windshield. Yep,, bright orange one at that.

The rest of the shots are the ole girl taped up getting ready for the SE and primer........and then the (drum roll) Paint!!

So you ask what color???? I answer --colors. That being light sandstone, estate green effect, kiwi green effect, and finally oyster. I have to say my brain was spazzing looking over all the color chips and trying to come up with a combo but I believe this will be the final. I think the lighter tones will give the ole gal justice. The sandstone will be the main hull color with the greens being the accent stripes, the estate will cover the cabin while the kiwi will be the horizontal surfaces with the other colors being striped in. The bottom will be the oyster. Needless to say I am looking forward to seeing it come to light.

Whoa that tape and paper apparatus you have is to freaking sweet!

Oh yeah I like earth tones, I shot some sand beige and dark leather brown on my SN. I like the contrasting dark and light colors on boats. So after the base oyster coat on the hull what's the plan for the second color?

There is no cooler boat in the universe than a Chieftain.

If your paint-job is 1/2 as good as that tape-job, it's going to be outstanding! Nice work!
