I live in an older Vermont Farmhouse (Circa 1860) and there have been many modifications from previous owners. Recently, I offered my son's former bedroom to my wife as a "craft room" ...... It has had carpet on the floor since I purchased this place 20 years ago. The carpet had to go. Upon stripping the carpet we had a nice unique surprise ..... wideboard pine floor. A very unusual one with boards that are 22" wide. IMO it is like finding gold!

Well..... rented the floor sander and the edger today and as you can see it is a work in progress. We are going to poly the floor but, I have considered a nice oil finish too.

I normally hate sanding a floor however, since this was pine it sanded very easy as compared to some of the maple floors I have done in the house.

Ouch!! Now I have a sore back and knees from the edge sanding.

Wow!! "Southern yellow pine" was considered the best back then.

Actually it is southern longleaf pine, which came primarily from the NC sandhills where I grew up. A conifer that is harder than many "hard" woods.

Congratulations, Bob! 8)

I would be willing to bet that the wood on that floor along with the rest of the house came from right here in the area.

In my attic there is still bark on many beams and the ridge beam has 5 sides, along with locust pegs and axe marks. Laid up stone foundation and a dirt basement floor.

Need a little closer look, but if it is in fact 'pine', I would be willing to bet it is Eastern White Pine.

Ayuh,....
Beautiful Work Bob,.....

Last winter when I was rehabbing the 2nd Riverhouse,....
I decided to do the Same Thing,....
Now, these houses are 1915/ 1920 vintage,...
The floors are a tongue,+ grooved softwood boards,... In less than Ideal condition.....Considering that the Sub-floor was now Also the Flooring,..... I needed to do something to Seal the living space from the unimproved space below......
This is what I came up with.......
What I found;

What I did;

And did somemore;

And what I got;

Lots,+ Lots of Black Chaulking,..... Cases of it,.... Installed on my Knees.....:'(
Then after Sanding,.....
I did the Polyurethane,+ Lamb's skin thing.......

I think it worked well with the Greatroom Cottage decor....8)

Bondo - Nice work.

Puddle Jumper - That room is on the 2nd floor. That was just a vent cut in the floor to allow heat to come up from the 1st floor. There was (long time ago) a huge coal / wood stove and cooking fireplace in the kitchen which was dragged out of the house (by a team of horses) during the depression (1929-30). I do have a wood stove in the basement that is ducted into the heat vents and half of the rooms on my second floor use those vents that are cut through the floor.

Looks great.

We just redid a kitchen and a dining room with laminate, athough it has a nice "country" feel to it.

Is that what you call a floor show?:p Great treasure Bob. Glad you were able to restore it. Did you use one of those sanders with the vacuum bag on it?

I had an oak floor refinished in 1970. I don't think there were any vacuum sanders then. Boy what a choking mess.

Yup. The sander is pictured in the first set of photos. It had a 9" wide drum and each piece of paper was about $5. It took about 6 pieces of the course (24 grit if I remember right) to cut through the old finish and paint spots. The paper loaded up fast and refused to be cleaned so I just replaced it. Followed up with sanding with finer grits and also sanded (using a 5" orbital) between coats of the poly.

I did not want to take it down to perfect and I think I would have lost the nail heads too. The nail heads still look square and the floor has a good look.

Trust me there was still a great deal of dust!

No doubt. You sure wouldn't want to loose all of the historical patina. Yeah, I missed the dust bag in the earlier picture. I was recently at a home show. There was a floor refinish vendor. They had a sanding machine, with a long hose and a big remote vacuum unit and bag. I guess they could put it outside. They were advertising no pain, no dust.
