hi guys, quick 2 questions. I have a 1969 55hp evinrude, and when I start it up it begins to leak oil from behind the prop. I've read all the threads I could about residue burn off, that could be it because I don't know the history on how the previous owner used the motor. I've heard it's from trolling for long periods of time. So I'm wondering how long will it take to clean out or is there a way that I can clean it out?
Secondly, The oil drips down onto the ground, and when I rev the motor the oil really starts driipping, So am I still ok? Or might it be a lower gear case seal? My gear oil is clean as a whistle, but this stuff is black. Any help will do I'm newly married and want to take my wife out fishing for her first time.

Sounds like exhaust oil to me ryan. Nothin' to worry about. If you want to clean it up, try a decarb. Should take away a lot of it.

If the gear lube is up and clean, you should be OK.

I also have a 69 55 evinrude that I have replaced the seals 2 of them behind the prop about the size of a fifty cent coin and 2 under the impeller about the size of a quarter. Mine does not leak oil from the prop but if I have it hooked to a water hose running some will form on the inside of the prop but that comes from exaust. Your seals behind the prop may need replacing. Be sure if you replace them that the 2 seals go face to face going in. Also check gear lube and see if the lube is milky if so you have water and oil mixing and seals need to be replaced, is so be careful when replacing lower unit and make sure the water pipes connect corectly and do yourself a favor and replace impeller at the same time.

The engine may have been fogged for the winter and this oil can take a while to burn off. Otherwise OBJ sounds bang on.

To me, if your gear oil looks OK and the oil you're seeing is black and doesn't have that distinctive gear oil smell, I'd take it for a day fishing and then check it again afterwards. I wouldn't do all the other stuff until after that time, unless it's quick and easy for you to do yourself.
