Re: my first boat and a good project i think... 1988 chris craft

I'll be watching this one. I have a similar ChrisCraft that hasn't seen water in years. I'm interested to see if there's any wood in the stringers. I think the build quality of these ChrisCraft boats is better than many out there.

prepair yourself to be disapointed i think they are great boats and mine is as well but i think they had some changes going on in the late 80's not for sure about to post pics.. i think that the previous owner left it out in the weather all the time maybe even left the plug in the boat..

the deck came off in about one piece!!!! will be great later when i put the new deck on! about everthing below is rotten... kinda expected that after talking to woodonglass and looking at other projects.

as you can see i used a jack with a 2 by 4 it broke most of the deck free and u ran a few screw drivers along the sids where i cut with the skill saw. this is my first project boat but i think i got really luck with the deck coming up like that?? or maybe its normal? i dont know.

Re: my first boat and a good project i think... 1988 chris craft

the foam was kinda a pain and had water sitting in it

so as you can see it was another productive day!

but i messed up kinda bad.. see last pic.. yep went thought the hull it a total of about 4 inches its where i started with the skill saw went a little and stoped to looked and seen it.. verry disapointed in myself but i have seen where people on here say these things are fixable.. so i readjusted the skill saw and cut the rest of it out.. i must have looked at the back transome 10 times looking at what kind of room i had to cut with the skill saw thought i was good the plywood is only 1/2 inch thick i had the blade at 3/4 deep well after taking the deck off i found that i was too close to the edge of the deck i cut further away after and would have been golden if i would have done it that way to start.. LIVE AND LEARN as a friend of mine says

Oh NO!!! it's totally ruined now!!! I'll be down to pick it up and take it off your hands. I'm sure you don't want to mess with it now, RIGHT?????:)

You know how to fiix it right?? If not just give a holler. That is awesome about your deck. I have NEVER seen one come up in one piece like that! You are lucky!!! Foam SUCKS!!!! and is a hassle. Make sure to go to Lowes and get a good respirator with replaceable cartridges. You don't want to be breathin all that old dust and fiberglass dust from the saw and the sanding that is going to be happenin soon. You're cruisin now...

I'm just sayin...:D

haha i bet you would take it off my hands.. its funny i pulled the engine out saturday and was pulling the boat back home with the engine in the back of my truck (used a frineds engine hoist) .. at a red light someone was asking if i wanted to sell it. haha probably never sell her after im done.

as for fixing the cut i made... i dont know just seen where a guy posted if you do cut through it is repairable.. i was guessing sanding it down and some fine glass cloth?? a shot in the dark..

first thing next weekend is measure all the stringers and everthing then start taking them out and the transome..

Re: my first boat and a good project i think... 1988 chris craft

ok so i have some questions. i have a few blocks of wood from work they were used to ship some stuff and was thinking of useing them as my engine mounts.. they are 4" by 6" by 3'6" and are the same hight as the old ones. the problem is that i dont know if they are treated or anything at all. i think they are but not sure.

also the metal plates for the engine mounts werent bolted down into the engine mounts in the same place like a half inch further forword on one side than the other and off set one way. is that normal? do i put the the engine in align it then screw in the lag it down with the lag bolts? just making some plans. is there no better way to secure them down than the lag bolts? was thinking that might be a path for water to get into the mounts and make them rotten..

also there is the hull a layer of foam then a layer of fiberglass.. didnt realize this befor i guess.. does that layer of fiberglass and foam need to come out??

last question i was able to get some extra foam kits from work that werent needed trying to figure out if they will work for my foam? they say polyurethane foam kit. there are two parts that you mix 50/50

No problem using the 4x6 they will be fine. Once coated with resin and glass they will last longer than you. I would NOT use lag bolts to mount the motor. Instead I would use lag studs. they look like this.
phonetx_2119_125313962
Ace hardware has em. Pre drill your holes coat em with epoxy and coate the lags with epoxy and then drive em home. If you have to remove the motor you NEVER have to remove the lags therefore keeping the moungts sealed.

Not sure I understand question 2 about the hull with foam and glass. Picture??

Last question about foam. Research it on google and see if it is waterproof. if so, then use it.

so then also do i put the engine in align it then secure the engine mounts? thats the only way i can think that i will get them in the right spot.

I am NOT an I/O guy so I am gunna leave this up to someone that is. But I would assume that would be the preferred Method. I do know it is CRITICAL to get the motor and the outdrive aligned properly but I am NOT sure on what all is involved with that. You might send a PM to FriscoBoater and see what he did.

ok sounds good.. got the stringers out this morning check it out was verry happy. used some 1 by 2's to keep it all together. and they all came out in one peice but they were most hollow! also the engine mounts were like a soil texture. got one of them out working on the other and the transome now.
