My first Boat Repair. :(

Ok I have own my boat since Feb 2010 and now comes my first repair. I understand boats needs maintenance, Repairs ECT, but I hope the joy of family boating over shadows the expense.

Here is what I'm having to fix.

Hit Floating Wood at lake.

Results = Spun Prop and Bent Blades.
Repair Cost = $ 70

I'm counting my blessings that I didn't damage the Outdrive. If it got really expensive I was planning on filing an Insurance Claim.

That's a cheap and easy fix. Don't sweat it!

Plenty more money to be spent!!!

Hitting stuff underwater is a concern. My advice is to take out insurance that covers that kind of thing. A bit of wood, no problem. Big rock at speed, new drive leg. Not so good!

If you don't own a spare prop, now would be the time to consider it. Have this prop fixed, and purchase another. That way you can swap and keep boating while the bad one gets fixed.
This wil happen again. Oh yes, it will happen again.

70 bucks is great. I was expecting you to say a couple hundred. And almost a year is pretty good. I agree you need a spare prop. Even if you get a new one and keep the used one for a backup. I promise the first time you have to use it you will be happy you had one on reserve.

I haven't run over anything floating in the water that banged up my prop, lucky I guess... Knock on wood, I probably just jinxed myself... But, one of the few times I let someone else drive my boat,,, (grabbing a drink from the cooler) they were behind the helm for 15 seconds and clunk, bang... WT*? Looked back and they had run over a 8' floater $70 later I was back in business.

$70 is just the beginning.

I figure into my annual budget about $1,000 for potential repairs. With the age of my boat something is going to need fixin. If I don't use the entire budget on stuff that broke then I get to do fun upgrades.

This year i got to do a new bimini and a swim platform!

$ 70 in the boating world is like the dust that blows away, the evaporation out of your beer can. its such a miniscule amount it doesnt even read on the meter. Thats how much $ will fall out of your pocket into the lake as you try to fish out the big bills R U picn,n up what im puttn down?

I have a spare prop but it has a chunk missing. Need to get that fixed.

If the repair cost a couple of hundred than I could have bought a new prop.

Good thing it wasn't a SS prop. I'm avoiding buying those props after I get past my NewBee phase of boating.

Maybe on my two year anniversary of being a boat owner.

There is always a lot of floating wood to be found in the lake I use. The first couple of summers I had my boat, I had two aluminum props...One to run and one at the shop getting fixed....After a while, I decided I had enough and put on a stainless prop, even though I had heard of the possibility of outdrive damage from a strike instead of prop damage...That was 12 years ago. I still have the same SS prop. It has hit a good bit of wood over the years and still looks like new. I have never damaged my outdrive.

I learned that acronym the very day I joined this forum back in AUG 09.

Yes boats are money Pits. I was told that when I bought my Pool as well. Proper maintenance should help with repair cost.

Its not about the money is why I posted this. It ticks me because I have to deal with this because some stupid Floating wood bit my prop.

I boat on a river, all kinds of crap in there. But........knock on wood, been out 15 times this year and that aluminum prop is only missing the paint! A big part of it is getting acquainted with your boating body of water also.

BTW - gear up for the winterizing costs. Storage and maintenance will soon run me $750 bones!

I don't plan to winterize unless the Snow gets too thick. Then maybe. We get alot of Snow in Gilbert AZ. Just outside of Phoenix.


I'm glad I don't have the expense of Winterizing.
