The throttle works good. It does shift in reverse, but the forward position feels like its in neutral.

Re: My Force 50 hp does not go in forward. Why?

I currently have a 1985 50 HP Outboard on my 15ft. Round-about that I inhereted from an in-law after he tangled the prop in sea-weeds and lost his forward thrust. I am new to small boats particularly in 2-stroke engines but I consider myself somewhat of a mechanic.

What I found on my boat was that the outboard bearing had moved forward closer to the reverse gear. In otherwords, the propeller and along with the shaft was pulled slightly out leaving the boat with only reverse thrust and no forward. All I did was reset the parts in thier proper place. That was almost 4 years ago. Have had several issues with my powerhead unrelated to this issue and have tested and used the boat ever since and have had no problem.

I also, read somewhere in this forum of "spun prop". But I do not see this to be problem in my case.

Hope this helps. :)

It's a vintage 1985 50 h.p. Force outboard. The outboard is a great running little motor. The lack of a forward gear is the only problem. The reverse direction does work.

How would i go about resetting the parts if the output shaft has moved forward?

Before I give you the steps, can you give me some history on how this may have happened? I know of two ways you can loss thrust. This may simply be due to the gear shift linkage located on the leg of your OB. Have someone move the F/R control and you look for this linkage located somewhere on the right side of the OB leg just behind the transom clamp. The locking nut maybe missing and the coupling nut may have gone one way causing you to loose forward engagement. See if this works. :)

Look below the head, and above the foot. There will be a rod...make sure it is moving up and down with the controls. If it is, then remove the foot and take the little pin out that connects the control rod to the controls. With the head off in your lap, push the rod all the way in and see if the prop locks into gear. Now pull it out and check for the same thing. If it does lock both ways, then your foot is fine and you just need adjustment in your linkages. I know this seems the long way around...but it will assure that you dont miss an obvious problem and waste a trip to the lake...Good luck.

I had a similar issue on my 85HP that I fixed this past weekend with the help of this forum. I could only get reverse and nothing else had moved in the shift linkage. Come to find out, the lower shift rod was dirty where it went into the seal to the lower unit. The seal is very snug to keep out the water and it was too tight and wouldn't allow the rod to move smoothly. I dropped the LU, removed the gearcase cover and cleaned the shift rod. It shifts into forward like a dream now.

Just my 2 cents.
