Ok guys can you give me a hand. I just bought a 2002 Aquasport with a 2002 Johnson 150.
Engine seems to idle fine.
Runs at 5000 WOT, is this ok?
THE PROBLEM IS WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR AT AN IDLE SPEED(1000rpm's)SOME TIMES IT TENDS TO DIE ON ME LIKE IT'S GETTING TO MUCH FUEL OR NOT ENOUGH. I've checked the bulb and it seems to be squishy sometimes at low speeds.
Air Leak in the fuel line, maybe?

Thanks and Happy 4th

Jonny

Re: My Johnson won't work right.

Welcome Jonny - -

You are low on the rpms. Check the OMC shop manual that I hope you buy and I think it will tell you that you should be pulling at least 5500 rpms. You risk coking of the rings (due to lugging) and eventual breakage. You should decarb at least every season.

The engine cutting out could be due to air or water or crud in the carbs. It is normal for the primer bulb to be a bit soft after the engine gets running. It's job is to fill the float chambers in the carbs to get started.

Not sure if this is the same problem or not, but my 1999 150 would hesitate and die as I tried to accelerate, worse after warmed up. Problem was throttle linkage adjustment had backed off and I had a gap between the timing advance on linkage. Loosened one screw, made adjustment, and runs great now. If you need more info e-mail me.

Re: My Johnson won't work right.

The primer bulb will remain hard only prior to start up. Once the engine is running, there is no pressure in the bulb because the fuel pump is sucking fuel through the line. It should however, NOT be sucked flat during operation. This would indicate a restriction in the fuel line between the tank and the bulb. As for RPM, it should be about 5500 but before driving yourelf nuts troubleshooting, make sure the bottom of the boat is clean. It takes a lot of power to overcome the drag caused by a dirty hull.

flyby

I have the same problem when my 2000 150hp gets warm. I put it in neutral and rev it up for a minute and it usually works fine. My WOT only hits 5000 whenever fully trimmed out. I know I need to get some more revs out of her, prop is the standard 19 pitch.

I'm having the exact same problem with my 1984 Evinrude 235. It hesitates and sometimes dies at takeoff, and won't run over 5000rpm at wot. I've been working on it for three summers and still haven't figured it out.

Re: My Johnson won't work right.

I have had the same problem since I bought my 1999 Johnson 150 new. Service has never been able to figure it out. I would be interested in those instructions but can't find your email address. Any help would be appreciated.
