I`ve just aquired a Shetland with a 50hp Mariner 2 stroke No:6222355 with quicksilver control box.
Can someone help me to establish the year of manufacture and what petrol/oil mix it needs.
I`ve had it running today but with difficulty. Is there a kill switch somewhere? What does the run switch do etc, etc.
I don`t know how to use the control box properly and have read several posts in this forum but non answer my question acurately.
I would normally ask the chap who sold it to me but there is a dispute so I appeal to all your knowlegeable members to help.

Please help if you can.

i don't know exactly but i think that's an early 80's motor, use 50:1 fuel/oil ratio, not sure about your control box question though, does it have a working key?

Re: My Mariner 50hp is new to me.

Looks just like the one I just replaced, minus the tilt/trim buttons.

That run switch is supposed to have a lanyard snapped on it that you attach to yourself so if you fly out of the boat it kills the engine.

About your hard start, did you press that button in at the pivot point of the throttle arm and then push the throttle arm forward? It will allow you to give the engine a little throttle while starting w/o having it in gear. It was broken on mine and getting it started was hit and miss because of it.

Also, not sure on that one but on mine if you pushed in the key it activates the choke (or enricher depending on the motor).

Thanks....thats brilliant exactly what I was looking for.
Whats been lacking is that little bit of throttle it should start fine now.
I suppose the run/kill switch has been disabled.
You have been a big help.
Thanks again and good luck and safe boating.

Re: My Mariner 50hp is new to me.

I`ve just tried to start her up but even with the knowledge of the throttle it was a non-starter untill I put the jump leads to my running car. Even then it took a lot of turning over untill it picked up and started. As soon as it didi it ran well and the throttle worked.
The choke does click in when I press the key in.
I now need some help with the starting problem.
Should I post a new thread?

Thanks for the help so far.......you are great!!!!!
