2 hours to do the carbs on that engine isnt unreasonable, neither is 2 hours for a pump change if the lower base was changed as well and the unit pressure tested and refilled with oil.
i hour to change the trigger is reasonable as well as an hour to change a stator unless the stator change WAS done AT the same TIME as the trigger.
however that motor wasnt very reliable when new and age did not help the merc(motorola and prestolite) systems.
anyone who has spent any time working on yamaha, nissan, tohatsu or suzuki AND worked for OMC and Mercury will tell you, merc and OMC electronics simply suck.
its also why here in the salt pond I wont work on old stuff.
no OMC stringers, merc type ones and nothing older than about 1985 period.
to much time hunting parts and heating bolts.
if I spend 4 hours on the phone hunting NLA or out of stock and backordered parts with no release date guess whos work order gets billed 4 hours.
let me give ya the scoop.
time I pull your workorder and then punch in on it, read it, call you cause the service manager failed to get all the info or trying to find the key.
take the truck around, hook up your rig, air up the tires and beat on the rusty coupler as nessasary, then back it in, check out the systems, look up parts, fix what is on the work order, test the work, write up anything else I found wrong, clean and stow my tools and diagnostic equipment and repark your rig.
then yes 2 hours for carbs or a water pump is very reasonable.

thanks for the detailed replies, im thinking 90psi is the minimum, it should be like 120's and im going to stress it hard that i need to know those #'s.

im thinking that these carbs are set way too rich.

there is oil on the plugs...not so much on #3 and it smokes like a chimney(lol edit, only in the barrel is smoked alot) if i bring it to 1200+ish rpm....no i dont go higher or try not to.

I just winterized it and im going to tell this mechanic to tune the carbs in the spring for free and get me those compression #'s. id like to know whats "good" in his book.

thats about all I can do for now ill get the carbs reset, maybe some new plugs (again) and some fresh fresh gas. after that i dont know what to do to get it going, i know cars not boats and bought some merc i thought would be as great as the 25hp johnson i removed.

any suggestions to fix this for spring would be great otherwise ill be riding WOT every ride:eek: which would be fun until it blew

note aswell: that it idles a bit rough(rich) and smooths out, also can be hard to start cold. ill open up a thread with some pics in the spring
