My first choice when considering new was a Tohatsu 9.8, because of price, reliability and weight. Lightest of all the 4 strokes at 81.5 lbs. 81.5 lbs really isn't that much heaver than the older two strokes. The concences is that a two stroke is the best but after my 68 years I really don't want a two stroke because of the oil mixing and the stink. Had my share of two strokes. Found a 2011 Tohatsu on the dreaded Craig's list but it was only about $450 less than a new one. I called the guy anyway. It was never used last year so he guessed it only had about 20 hours on it in those two years. Problem is he left the old gas in it, however it was at an outboard shop now having the carb cleaned an inspected. Told him I could buy new one for not a whole lot more. He said the service guy told him the same thing. After a little negotiating I agreed to meet him at the boat shop when it was ready and tank test it and if it's A-OK I got me a motor for $1100. Under low retail on NADA. Will have enough left over to pay for my Saturn when they come in!

$1100 is not bad if the shop can actually fix it and offer some type of guarentee.

Even thou 80lbs is not alot. It gets old having to carry it

Re: My motor quest

It will be staying inflated at our winter RV resort on the COLO RIVER in AZ. Will be on launching wheels the whole time parked next to our 5th wheel, about a 100 feet from the launching point. Will be use sparingly on a couple of mountain reservoirs for pleasure cruising in CO\WY.
Not sure where the weight problem will come into play as it is only 7 lbs heavier, about the weight of a gallon of gas, than the 35 year old Johnson I was looking at.
As for bad gas in the carburetor I can pull one off and clean it blind folded as I have been in the ATV, small engine repair business for the last 25 years. Saw my share of bad gas in the carburetor.

Don't believe everything you read. Both motors have same displacement, same gear ratio, and are made by Tohatsu. In other words, they are all the same except for advertising departments.

So merc brands them and raises the price by 400 bucks? Fair enough

Yep. For a time Evinrude sold an 18 HP and Johnson sold the 20 HP. All parts were completely interchangeable, but the Johnson was rated at a higher RPM than the Evinrude. Strictly an advertising department move.

My 30 HP Merc is the same as the Tohatsu except that Merc has the shift incorporated with the tiller handle. It is separate on the Tohatsu which would have been my choice if I had had one. It is too easy to go for idle speed and find yourself increasing the speed but in reverse. Fun times at the boat ramp with wind blowing across the ramp:( Makes you look like a greenhorn.

Re: My motor quest

I believe all Tohatsus are rated for saltwater use- im a long time Yamma-Hamma guy but i thijk my next two motors will be Tohatsu, 3.5 for my M4, (someday), 20 horse short shaft tiller for my next jon boat.

(Dont look at the 35/50 jet they make WOW what a cool motor,- youll start justifying building a river boat for the motor, LOL)

Re: My motor quest

The American outboard brands were primarily made for fresh water due to the majority of the motors being used in fresh water. Japanese motors on the other hand were primarily used in salt so made to handle the corrosive service. Eventually American brands were fitted out for salt water with stainless and more corrosion resistant alloys.

As many of the Japanese motors were used commercially, the earlier motors were made easy to repair without many fancy add ons. When we bought the first Nisson, it was so simple that it appeared almost bare bones. No wonder that they basically took over the outboard market.

Re: My motor quest

So what precautions will I need to take with my 93 Johnson 2hp? Will probably see a fair amount of brackish water in the cape fear area of NC.

Get spare plugs, make sure your not running your engine to lean (meaning not enough oil to gas). Don't run out of gas. Some spare hose clamps. That 2 you have is designed to run for 40 years. Enjoy

You want to flush your motor using freshwater
Depending on the usage it could be every time you take it out.
Once a week
Once a month
Before any type of long term storage.

Re: My motor quest

As the water evaporates inside the cooling passages inside the motor, solids are deposited inside the passages. These both plug passages, minimize the ability of heat transfer by the water which flows through the passages when the motor is in operation, and cause corrosion of the metal.

Long way of saying that a motor should be run in fresh water as soon as possible after being run in salt water. If it could be flushed with fresh water while still warm from running in salt water, deposits could be minimized. Anyone who has ever cleaned out cooling water passages in a motor could describe some awful deposits in the passages.

Salt ate the aluminum casting off the cylinder sleeves on one of our motors in the past. When water showed up in the exhaust, it was too late for that powerhead. So keep it clean if you want it to last.

The ramp we often use has a spigot available, so we carry a water hose and cuff for the motor in our truck. We either run the motor immediately after coming off the ramp or when we get home.

Take a bucket and flush engine on with fresh water after each outing if not returning home for some days or do it once at home if returning same day...

Happy Boating

Re: My motor quest

Went and picked up the motor today from the dealer that had it and meet the service guy. They cleaned the carb but said nothind wa s wrong with it and it started and ran just fine. Said the guy didn't know how to start it and most guys don't even read the owners manual. If I wanted them to tank it and run it they would charge half hour labor because they were so behind. Said there is nothing wrong and it's a hell of a good motor and price. Passed on the tank test mostly because I read the great reviews on this shop besides it look BRAND NEW! I was impressed. The owner came and I gave him 1100. Seemed like a real decent guy. Took off with my motor. Got home built a stand and put it in a bucket off water. Started the first pull and purred like a kitten! Ran it quite a while and restarted adozzen times, after waiting a while and waiting a while. NEVER FAILED TO START THE FIRST PULL! I'm stoked! Every one that saw it said it looked brand new. Now for my boat!

Enjoy your new outboard. Can you please post pics and model # of what you purchased? Thanks
