The lower heating element on my Whirlpool electric oven is no longer getting hot but the top one is ok. Is it the element itself that goes bad or is the culprit some kind of gizmo inside the oven that could kill me? Thanks.

The heating element can go bad, but more likely I think would be the connector has cooked. You should be able to unscrew the plate on the back wall and pull the whole thing forward. If the connector is fried it will be very obvious.

I pulled it forward but all I saw was two red wires that clip to the back of the element. They look fine, no scorching or melting of the insulation. Is there any way to check the element? Thanks

With a Multimeter you can see if there's continuity thru the Element,......
And you can see if there's Power to the connection you speak of.........

Also look to see if there are any spots that look like a "bubble" on the element.

Well what's the verdict CN? I was in my local electrical supply yesterday. I saw a guy walking out with two oven heater element assemblies. Ah Ha, I thought, I'll find out the score. Turns out he was trying new element because his oven kept blowing the circuit breaker. Not exactly your problem.

I'll probably take a look at it this weekend. I have three curious little kids and curious little kids and 220 outlets make bad bedfellows.

Better safe than sorry.

T'was indeed the element and I know now what icy ment by bubbles. It was nearly corroded in half there. Guess I'm off to the service store. Thanks.

Glad you got it Spots. Some projects are so simple once you get thru the learnin curve. That's what's so neat about iboats. So many good people with such varied experiences. Even if your querie does not get a specific answer, sometimes it helps you zero in on a solution. You'd pay big bucks if you had to have the experts come in. aaaaaaaaaand sometimes it is a lot of fun to get your education this way.
