Re: My pick-ups got the wiggles...

almost there spot, hang in there...... and yep, square one .
now a little more diagnosis on your part, vacuum for the valve is computer controlled via a control solenoid, should be mounted on a steel plate - pass. side of engine, top of intake manifold. if you'll follow the vacuum hose from the egr valve, you should end up at this solenoid.
check to see both hoses are connected and the electric is also.
is everything is connected, you need to start the engine, remove the hose going to the throttle body assy. and see if you have vacuum in that hose. if answer is no, the gasket under the throttle body unit is broken and blocking the vacuum port. if answer is yes, try to remove other hose from solenoid and connect directly to hose from throttle body assy. this will open the egr valve and stall the engine. if engine will stall, vacuum is adequate to open valve, and solenoid is bad or your computer is not performing correctly, this could be the computer itself, or a bad ground wire connection on the engine.
i would check all wires that are attached to engine for ground purposes to make sure good connections, if all are ok, then i'd replace the solenoid, cheapest.
honestly, my past experience, i've seen alot of the solenoids go bad, but also lots of tbi gasket damage as well.
do you inspection and let us know what you found ........
dolluper, jump in here anytime if i'm missing something ...... this fella needs to go fishin ....

Humm do you still have your old map sensor, they are coded different also,if the map fails as these codes are showing it will go to a preset value and your fuel delivery will be controlled by your TPS throttle postioning sensor
code 33 can be set by a misfire or low vaccum
A low reading code 33 or high 34 means ECM {electronic control module]wiring is alright but doesn't mean the ECM is ok
Back to the start again
check your intake vacuum
check for a misfire
Orginally before you started throwing parts at it how did it run??? Was it looping [idle high then low] loss of power, what??? please explain
Another ??? did you try to knock out the carbon in the EGR [with soft faced [plastic] hammer]

Re: My pick-ups got the wiggles...

It was actually running ok prior to this ordeal but my fuel milage had dropped about 5 mpg over the last two years. The engine light was on so everyone I talked to suspected the O2 sensor was bad. I got out as much of the carbon as I could with carb cleaner and a small scraper. I couldn't do much with the intake other than clean around it with a rag and I had to use a small mirror just to see how to do that. A gearhead I work with suggested taking a can of ether and fogging around the base of the throttle body to check for leaks. If you don't hear from me after this post, email some flowers to my wife. lol

spots

Re: My pick-ups got the wiggles...

code 33 ( map ) will set from egr failure, egr solenoid that does not turn off - allowing constant vacuum to be applied to egr valve at the wrong time.
code 32 ( egr ) will set from sticking egr valve or faulty egr control solenoid or lack of vacuum source to the egr solenoid.
let's also remember that the codes you extracted are possibly history codes that are not current ....... and will continue to show until they have been cleared from system - even if the problem is no longer present..........

Re: My pick-ups got the wiggles...

I pulled the rear hose off (the one leading to the EGR valve) and nothing happened nor could I detect any vacuum. I pulled off the front hose and the rpm increased. Neither made any significant changes to the engine, but it was cold. I also noticed that the engine light did not come on today and I drove about 50 miles.

spots

The check engine light has not come on for a few days but I'm not gonna hold my breath. I'll change the tbi gasket and a few other routine (but overdue) parts, plugs, wires etc. as soon as I get a chance.

You guys really came to bat for me on this one. I sincerely appreciate the help!

spots

Hey cm sports, dont forget to change or check your fuel filter. I worked as an entry level tech for 3 years at a gm dealership and we noticed that decreasing fuel quality and increase in additives caused a lot of filters to start plugging up quicker than in the past. We change them at 30000 miles. also check that your injectors are spraying correctly. I suspect the tbi gasket as well. look at your plugs when you remove them and see if they all look similar in color around the electrodes. If one is way white or black and oily you have a problem with that cylinder. Ive seen a lot of people throw money andd parts at a vehicle that a basic maintenance problem would have fixed. These guys that have been posting are right on point with the diagnosis so far but given that I still didnt notice you checking the basics thuroughly, unless I missed that part.

The fuel filter is also on my list. I just need to find the time and place to change it. I figure gas will go everywhere, even with a pan, and our subdivision has rules about that stuff. I'll take it down to pop's shop on a weekend and change it.

thanks glen

spots
