Had the rear mooring line break during a windstorm last week. Repeatedly slammed the bow in a metal floating dock. Looks like it's been gnawed on. Gelcoat guy says ~$1500 to fix. :/ Pics tomorrow.

Man that's horrible. I'm sorry to hear that

I can understand your pain. I had a similar accident this summer on a current project, with a one month old paint job....

Hope it is resolved soon

I'm surprised they didn't call it negligence and stick you with it.

I'm super glad it worked out for you. It's nice to see the system work as it should

Marine insurance is a wonderful thing. The more time I spend on iboats the more I realize how important it really is!

Learned something on this one. We were at the marina 2 days before this occurred. I saw that the line was worn. Hindsight is 20/20. If it looks like it might break it probably will.

Re: My poor boat (pictures)

glad it worked out. It's amazing how lines that seem "good enough" can fail.
I came out to the dock to retie my boat and it was gone. Dark and stormy night, on an island, outgoing tide. Went back inside and found the guy who was with me when we docked and we went together to the end of the pier. There, hanging off the cleat, was half of my bowline. "Sorry about your boat but I sure am glad to see this!" he said, as we both assumed he hadn't tied it correctly. It appears the line, which was old anyway, rubbed against a rusted sign on the piling and cut through.

I ended up OK. Although the surrounding marsh had flooded, my motor was still down and it hung up on the edge of the marsh just out of sight of the floodlights; we got another boat and retrieved it. Had it kept going, it may have blown for miles in the dark across flooded marsh, or it may have drifted with the tide out a nearby ocean inlet.

it's scary how a whole boat, maybe worth tens of thousands of dollars (or a couple of bucks, like mine!) ride on a cheap old piece of equipment like a line, a cleat, a bilge-pump, a sea **** valve.

So true. The rear mooring line was deployed around a 2 x 6. That's what caused the chaffing. Next time I get a piece of rubber hose to feed the line through.

It's amazing how quickly "rubbing" can chew through a line. I had one rub through on a metal dock in choppy water in the time it took me to park the truck!

It was real choppy (I should never have launched) and the boat was bouncing a lot. The metal grid type dock sawed right through it.

Re: My poor boat (pictures)

I forgot to mention that, along with the repairs the shop is buffing from the rub rail down and replacing a worn white stripe that seperates the green from the light gray hull gelcoat. It needed it badly. I got to thinking (always dangerous for me). Why not just have them finish the buff job and do the whole rig? Maybe I could work a deal since they are already doing more than half.

No chance. Not sure how much is normal to charge per foot but the guy told me $28 per foot, no discount because half was already being done. $28 x 23 ft.=$644.00. Seems like a pretty high number.

What a great job. Buffed everything below the rub rail, replaced the white stripe. Even replaced the rub rail at the bow because it was beat up.

True. Didn't realize how bad the trailer was looking until the boat was cleaned up. Still, it only sits on it in the winter. The rest of the time the trailer's in s torage.
