my prop wont spin?!

ok 78 merc 140... i pulled everything apart from the prop up all the drive shafts thus far work. when i put in gear the prop locks like it should but doesnt turn in either reverse or fwd. please help me i am so confused. when the gear handle is in neutral it spins freely i am confused please let me know what i could look at it has to be something in the engine because the back of the drive train is working

if its in nuetral and spins freely you should have it correct, If in gear you cant spin it, then it may be cuz your trying to essential turn the crankshaft all components internaly by spining the prop, not good, and not easy, instead turn the fly wheel, if the prop spins then its right.

Well if you cant turn it when its in gear, that ok like sayed above you are trying to turn the entire engine that way. If you cant or dont want to try by running the engine, turn the engine over by hand by spinning flywheel. It sounds like you got it right though.

yes that is exactly how it all works.. so i know all of this is correct but the problem is that when the motor is on and is out in gear the prop doesnt spin, i i pulled apart the entire back enf of the motor and everything looks good so far but like i said there is no spin on the prop when in gear....? thank you guys for everythging

solar... if it doesnt spin when i turn the fly wheel then what is the problem?

i had the same problem with my outboard and it turned out the driveshaft(vertical one) had actually splitin half. If this has happened dont run th e motor too long cuz theres nothing to spin the impellar in its housing.
