Hi folks,
my son just bought his 1st boat and he fires it up and there is no sign of water coming out the telltale. (with ear muffs and submerged in a tub of water)
He thinks it needs a water pump and housing.

What would be the right way to approach this problem.

thank you
Tony

Get a piece of wire and root around in the tell tale to see if it's plugged up. But first, confirm that it is getting a hot. You can do this a couple of ways. You can look at the temp gauge on the dash, or get a thermometer. I like the lazer thermometers from the auto parts store. For 30-40 bucks, they sure are handy. Find the temperature of the heads and report back to us. Then, if it is heating up, you have to determine WHY. Crud in the heads? Bad water pump? Bad Poppet valve? Bad Thermostats? All of the above? Basically, if you think you need a water pump, throw one in there and see where that gets you. Heat kills outboards, so it is VERY important that you get the cooling system 100 percent fixed.
Hope I helped

thanks Rob, I do have a infared temp meter. I know he had it running for a minute with no water. What temps should I be looking for?

On the top of my number one cylinder, I measure 135 degress at idle. I am sure there will be a lot of answers/opinions to this and I am by no means an expert as to what temp you should be running. I would think you should be running between 175-185 at WOT.
