my stator is dripping goo

1973 evinrude 50hp -this thing came to me for cheap but it has more than its share of problems.....

alright so the timer base was frozen up (wouldnt move at all) so i took the flywheel off and got that working and i noticed theres black goo dripping out of the large coils on the front and the back of the stator im guessing this is a no go and means that it needs replacing but just wanted a second opinion, also the plastic insulation on the those coils is cracked too

Yes, the stator is melting and needs replacing. Check the rectifier also. Sometimes they go in pairs....

the rectifier's got frayed wires so its getting replaced and its probably what got the stator....

Melting charge coils was a common problem with 1973 models. Faulty design/materials choice was the cause.

can you replace just the coils on these? i see marine engine has some for a slightly later model 50hp?

If you replace the stator with one from CDI, there is no doubt in my mind that they have improved the design of those coils so that they do not melt anymore. New electronic parts have the benefit of improved design.

no just the charge coils on the stator? (the black ones ) everything else looks good and ive found those charge coils for 15 bux each.... CDI makes em? pn# 173-4333 i got the old ones slid off already??

Go for it. Much cheaper than a new stator, and I still think the new coils will have a better design.

yeah i ohmed out the the old coils ... they read about 450 ohms each and then in a series (theyre wired that way) i got around 900 ohms looked up those coils on cdi's web site and theyre sposed to be about 450 ohms each too id just have to wire two of them in a series and epoxy em back on ... i dont see why it wouldnt work would you?

I haven't looked at the specifics of what you are doing, but if CDI is selling these individual coils as replacements for the ones on your stator...I guess it is OK to do.

The charge coils are the coils that provide high voltages to the pack(s) so that the pack can switch that voltage out to the individual spark coils, perfectly timed of course, to spark each plug. If your charge coils are bad, no spark.

But your post confuses me a bit, you are saying the old coils are reading the same resistance (450) as the specs published by CDI for the new ones? If so, why do you assume the old ones are bad? Can you do a DVA voltage measurement on the brown wire pair at starter speed? Look for the spec'ed voltage output...

they were cracked and dripping goo ... they were about to fail - i had the flywheel off already so i took the stator off and checked em... in hind site they probably wouldve been ok for a little while longer but im planning on selling the engine when i get it up and running and dont want somone coming back whining that the stator went out you know?

cant do that the old charge coils are already off the stator

the power pack is supposed to be good on this thing how do i check it? - ive got a multi meter

Can't bench test a powerpack. Gotta have stator and timerbase inputs....
