I Bought This A Month Back On Ebay To Turn Into A Little Fishing Boat, But After Further Investigation Into The Crestliner Site, I Realised I'd Got Myself A Bit Of A Classic, So I Started To Restore It After Reading Your Forum And Getting Some Helpful Information From It.
I Thought You Might Like Some Pictures And Follow My Progress.

Welcome aboard Paul! Always good to have another lumie restore thread. Can you provide more info on your boat? I'm not too familiar with the Crestliners, but it looks like it could be a '59 Viking or Buccaneer.

Have you decided on what motor you plan to run?

Looking forward to following your progress.

Cheers,
JTB

Well 90% of the battle is over, (She Floats). It's great that you decided to restore this ole boat and one thing that intriques me is the mounting of the wheel towards the port side. This may be common for the older boats but you know it's something I never paid attention to before. The oldest aluminum boat we owned when I was a kid, we don't have any photo's of and I just can't remember if the wheel was mounted port or starboard.

Good luck and show some pic's of restoration.

It's a funny thing. Here in North America most boats are right hand drive and our cars are left hand drive. I see yours is left hand drive, and your cars are right hand drive. Hmmm. Just a thought.
Great looking boat by the way.

Re: My Tinny In The Uk.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR INTEREST - Just a few short points for now.

It is not a Crestliner - thanks to crestliner restoration for that info.

We have been told that it is a sero terrapin, made by Saunders and Roe who used to make aluminium flying boats. We are waiting for a response from Basildon Motorboat Museum to confirm that.

It is customary on our rivers to pass on the right hand side so if this boat was made as a runabout on our rivers then the steering wheel is on the correct side.

Engine 10 - 20hp??
Looking for age related, but few and far between over here - Anybody like to put one in the post, will pay shipping charges.

That's all for now, but bear in mind we're dangling worms on a hook here so any one with any more info please, please pass it on to me!

Off to get some more nitrmors now!

Paul

Re: My Tinny In The Uk.

Thanks for the update. I glanced at a few Crestliners yesterday and didn't see any that really matched yours, which now makes sense, since it's not a CL.

The Saunders-Roe or Saro boats were made in the UK, so there probably aren't many on this side of the pond. You're right, it looks like Saro was an aircraft and marine engineering company that originally concentrated on building 'flying boats' and other aircraft after Saunders and Roe merged in 1929. Keep us updated on what you find out from the museum. You should have a nice little classic on your hands when it's all said and done.

I would guess a boat that size should easily accomodate a 35-40hp. I guess it depends on where you're going to use it and how fast you want to get there :D

BTW, nice progress. What are you using to strip the paint? It's looking good so far. Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming!

Re: My Tinny In The Uk.

I would guess this boat was made in 50's just by the shape of the windshield, and a 35 hp Johnson of this era would probably be a perfect size to power it.

Maybe one of our collector's over here would be willing to part with one of their treasures to help in the rejuvination of an oldie but goodie. There have to be hundreds or more still out there. Too bad but most advertised on e-bay etc will only allow pick up. If you have to you could put a newer model on but I agree with you that and older vintage motor would be better.

Good luck but judging from the excellent job your doing so far it dosen't look like you need luck. (Nice work)

Re: My Tinny In The Uk.

Just a quick one today, guests arriving later - need to clear the decks!
Here's what i used for stripping it, Nitromors and a toilet brush and then fine finishing with wire wool, then I'll start with wet and dry 400 working up to 1200.
Then the serious work of polishing starts.
I've put some pics of the badge from the steering wheel up - that might keep you busy for the weekend, trying to identify it! Any suggestions welcome.
Hope I'm keeping you updated enough?
Thanks
Paul

Re: My Tinny In The Uk.

Should put some water IN it to see if there are any leaks or bad rivets. That crest looks like Crestliner brand but not 100%.

Re: My Tinny In The Uk.

Update For This Afternoon.
Decided To Do The Bottom. Don't Know If You've Noticed Yet But The Sides Of The Hull Are All Folded Out Of One Sheet - There Is No Joint Or Chine On This Boat.
Will Strip The Inside Tomorrow And Show The Construction Of The Stringers Which Run The Full Length Of The Boat, Which Makes It Look More And More Like Aircraft Construction.
As For Filling It With Water - I Know It Holds Water Because It Was Sunk When I Bought It And After I Pumped It Out It Stayed Afloat.

Re: My Tinny In The Uk.

Hi Paul,

im almost 100% Sure this is a sero terrapin, as ive just bought the exact same boat off ebay, although they guy i bought it off was a welder for a boat company in anglesey whom added a caddy to it aswell, he told me it was originally a sero terrapin, and he has been in the boat business from what im told 40yrs...

My sero terrapin is pritty much complete just need added extras an a few tweaks but looks good, will get some pics up for you..
