Just cut out 2 frame pieces, woo hoo! Try for more tommorrow.I need to get some diff. blades for the jigsaw so that I can cut the inner part of the frames with out splintering them.I dont really like using my jigsaw, but I cant cut the middle out with my band saw.No pics yet, Im too lazy to take them tonight!

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

Well I have 6 out of 8 frames cut out.I was thinking that I could get away with fewer frames, but after thinking about it I know why I cant. (or wont)For one thing the plans call for 8, and I ASSume that the original designer new how to build it, and I didnt want the hassles of redesigning it.Second, after having a few frames cut,I realized that you need all of the frames so that you can attach the chine strips and gunwales to them. The strips are 3/4 inch and are going to be kinda tough to bend around. It doesnt appear to be much of a curve in the plans, but after looking at the frames,it is a pretty good curve.I think that 1/2 strips would have been fine for this boat.(more than fine actualy)They would be easier to bend and made it a little bit lighter.I would change it but I already have the frames notched for the 3/4 strips.I plan on having the other 2 frames done today, and then starting to make the strongback as well. The plans call for a 2x4,but I havent found one straight enough to use,and it has to be STRAIGHT.Since you are building the boat based on the strongback, if it is off then so will your whole boat be.I am going to make it out of plywood so that I know it will be straight.I might even make a template for it :D Once the frame and strongback and templates are done, then the fun begins!I also plan on making frame number 4 and the keelson out of plywood also.I have enough mahogany to make them, but I am too lazy to glue up all the boards that it would take to do it!Now,to keep the 3 stooges happy here are the photos!

Three frames:
thought there were 6 I see 3... :D

You might get a bit farther and it might not be as expensive if you would stop cutting up good lumber :D

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

lol I like the new signature. That looks like its gonna be pretty friggen heavy when your done with it. should be able to tow it down to the lake behind the lawnmower without wheels under it :D

In all sincerity though... I wonder if its neccesary to use that thick of wood for the frames or if guy could use ¼" but do it up like the stringers on the minimax. The stringers and nose piece on the max feel plenty strong because of the stripping around the edges. wonder if that would work for a yak like yours. it would be more time consuming though but I bet you'd drop a lot of weight off and its not like your dropping a 10 hp on a yak.

dink the only problem is that you would have a hard time screwing the chine and gunwale strips in to the edge of 1/4 inch ply.HMMMMMMMM,lets see.You suggest using 1/4 instead of the 1/2 that it calls for. That would be HALF of what its supposed to be.Does any one here see a pattern (not template) with dink? :D
Btw, this is frikin cool.Im thinking that the Plyak needs an inboard weed eater drive! :D

jet yak

Now we're talking! I told you that thing is overbuilt. You could jump out of planes with it like Indiana Jones. Chine strips: You could bend three 1/4" pieces and lam. them. You could use 1/2" strips also and put a 1/4" filler about 6" long at each frame to ease the bend at that point. You could probably get away with a lot of weight savings there if you wanted to.

Nice pencil ya sissy. :p

was that canoe, or submarine?IVE GOT IT!Since we are saying that your canoe is going to fold like a banana, and it is going to be more like a submarine than a boat, I say that we call it "THE YELLOW SUBMARINE". We all live in the yellow submarine, the yellow submarine, the yellow submarine. We all live....... :p

cpj the stringers and nose piece in the minimax are made of quarter inch... then you take strips of 1" x 3/4" and go around the outside edges on both sides so you have something to screw or glue to. It still makes for a very strong frame with half the weight.... check out the plans on my project page.

Oh and while you were jig sawing thick ply that will split when ya screw into the ends, I was out playing in a sturdy ¼" ply minimax :D

Dern you Dink!Your A.D.D is catching. Now i might just use 1/4 and put some strips on the edges to screw the chines to.That would make it lighter for sure. And even though I already have most of the frames cut thats ok it was free wood. And guess what else?Thats right, now I have all my TEMPLATES!!!!Gotta get the kids outta Mrs. Periwinkles hair for awhile,be back later.
P.S. DC is getting interesting!

Re: My YAK by CPJ (aka YAK LIGHT)

Ive got the strong back complete!I have the supports for the frames attached to the strongback.I ended up making the strong back out of some plywood that I had lying around. It worked out rather well, and it is pretty straight.ALOT straighter than it would have been if I would have used a 2x4 as the plans called for.Lumber isnt what it used to be, from what I have found. Now if I hadnt ended up spending the past day and a half YAKING (pun intended) from some bad taco bell, I might be farther along.

Nobody believes you without pictures! :D Using plywood for the strongback is a great idea. It will also probably resist bowing and twisting with the weather much better than a pine 2x4 if you're building in an unheated garage. Also, you've got quite the workshop there, where do you keep your cars? :)
