Greetings iBoating community. Seeking some help to diagnose/replace the stater on my 1991 three cylinder 75 hp Mercury.
A few weeks back my boat would no longer run and after some initial diagnosis found that none of the cylinders had spark. I immediately jumped to the CDI pack and replaced it. Went to start it and again no spark. A trustee mechanic told me that it was either the stater or ignition issue. He had me remove the black/yellow wire along the bottom of the CDI pack to rule out any kind of issue with the key ignition. After still getting no spark, all eyes were on the stator.
After finding that my specific range of serial number had no specific stators are listed for it so I had to remove the flywheel to get a number from the stator directly. I did so and I'm having a hard time finding a match ( or what looks like one) due to the number of wires on my stator. As you can see by the pictures this has five wires. The two yellow that should be getting AC voltage through a red or blue and the black. Everything I see online looks like it has six or more. You can see the part number on the stator but it doesn't seem to be pointing me to anything that might be a direct plug-and-play.
So after my long drawn out story here? Looking to find out The answer to a couple questions:
- How do I check this with an ohmmeter. Everything I see online again is a six wire scenario. ( Took some readings for it directly while it was still mounted on the engine and I can share that information if it'll be of use. )
- if I can prove to myself that this is bad, what can I be looking for for replacement? I'm kind of feeling like I'm going to be better off bring it directly to Marina repair shop so maybe mechanic that I can look at directly.
