Mystery Wood

Found a piece of wood in my ski locker today (First pic). Looks like it may be a support under the edge of the opening of the ski locker.

The second pic is under that edge, inside the locker. I put an arrow where it looks like the wood used to be.

The third pic is of the ski locker, and I drew an arrow to show exactly where, just under the metal edge.

The other side of the ski locker looks the same. Like there should be wood there too. But I only found one piece. I wonder if the missing piece of wood was **** canned years ago. This is a 16 year old boat that I've had for 2 years so who knows...

Now that I think about it. I may have thrown away a piece of wood similar to this when I first got the boat. Being new to boating and not knowing.

Anyway, if this wood does go there, can I just screw it in?

JP127, well it certainly looks like there was something there at one time. But I am not so sure that piece of wood was original. It is not coated with anything and that seems strange to me. I would have thought they would have used something coated to make it last without rotting. But that is only a wild guess on my part. I would think there should be something there to allow the edges be support better. :noidea:

Pull off the aluminum frame of the ski locker door. See if the edge of the plywood decking was treated, or if you have rot in the edge of the deck. If you have rot, that will need to be fixed. You can install cleats under the ski door frame, to help support it, but if the deck rot persists, the cleats will fall off.

Am I wrong, but I didn't think that was the stringer. Just looks like part of the wood deck.

Something was there to bolster the edge of the locker. That piece is not original. It was most likely glued in. I would treat/varnish a similar piece of hardwood or use cedar and use 3M 5200 to glue it in. I don't like drilling holes in boats where the manufacturer didn't, that's me. It is certainly not a stringer.

I was thinking the same thing. Will the 3M stick to the wood if it's treated? And is there any specific wood treatment you recommend?

Looks like the wood went length wise down the ski locker. I bought pressure treated wood to replace it. Also looks like they were stapled along the wall of the ski locker.

My plan is to let the wood, along the ski locker walls, dry out and replace it. This time I'm not going to use staples or screws. Just going to use 5200. Thoughts?

I also noticed some cracks and chips in the fiberglass, in the ski locker. I want to patch those areas as well. Will something like this work?*

It says it's water proof. And it doesn't have to look pretty.

I peeled back some fiberglass and the wood feels firm.
?

And then I'm thinking of glueing a new brace here with 5200. This is where the original brace was. As you can see, it's a little smaller. I'll glue it to the side and under the floor of the boat.

?

I would then like to find something to coat the wood and cracked fiberglass to help keep it water proof. Suggestions? I'll also fill the areas where I peeled back the fiberglass. Suggestions? I really don't want to use actual fiberglass. Hoping there's something easier to apply. It doesn't have to be pretty. Just functional. And whatever I use to fill the areas I'd like it to dry white.

Do you want to fix it properly? If so, remove the frame, grind down any of the F/G or wood that is damaged. If you can get to clean, sound wood, cover it with F/G cloth and polyester resin. Make sure the deck edges are sealed with resin as well.

Seal a couple of 2X2 cleats and screw them to the sides of the ski well, if it needs the support.
