It's been a while since I've been able to work on my 16' aluminum project boat, but I thought an update was in order.

The trim pump and cylinders are out, the hull is almost stripped of wires and hardware and I did manage to build an engine stand.

Maybe this weekend I'll get the engine off!

Jim

Re: Naden progress

what are you going to do with all those 2x's. i hope it's not the new floor, i'd use 5/8 exterior grade fir plywood, painted and sealed on all sides and edges, 2 coats. then put a non skid finish top coat. you can chaulk a center line thru the boat, and measure from it. at every cross section, and get your pattern. or you can get refrigerator boxes, to make a template. get it in riveted, or screwed down, and you can caulk the edges if you like.

Hey, TD

Those are just to walk on while I pull out the old floor rivets, etc. I didn't want to walk on the hull. The old floor came out in one piece so I saved it for a template. What caulk would you recommend around the edges when I do get to the new floor?

By the way, saw your Duracraft - nice job!

Re: Naden progress

Thanks, Anthony

I got the design from other threads on this forum, just bashed a few of my favorites together. It's a 1967 Merc 650 (65 hp inline 4). Great compression and good spark, needs l/u work (crack in torpedo), rebuild water pump and trim pump overhaul.

Figured I'd rebuild carbs and fuel pumps while I'm at it. The engine has Thunderbolt ignition - any suggestions about other worthwhile repairs for reliability?

pressure test that cracked lower before putting any money into it. i don't caulk mine, it also any water to free flow, and air to keep the bilge dry. i have found on other projects that the Alex brand, cheap caulk at home depot is as good as any. you don't want a hard joint between the floor and the hull in an aluminum boat.

Re: Naden progress

Good idea - I will after I get it welded up - I am pretty sure at least the rear seal is bad. Hard to tell because of the leakage though. I'm assuming I'll have to rebuild the lower unit and, of course, rebuild the water pump.

Since the manufacturer didn't caulk the floor down, I wasn't going to. It should be O.K. to caulk around the outside edge of the new floor though, shouldn't it?

Thx,

Jim
