I've been looking for some nav lights for my Zodiac 470. There is no really good place to mount lights at the front because having to run wires up there. My old inflatable had the lights on the sides of the console. But has been pointed out this is not a very good place because they are too low and are easily obstructed. While a light can be mounted on the left side of the console, there isn't any space on the right side due to the engine control box.
My boat has a vertical SS grab rail that goes around the windscreen (up both sides and across the top) and is about 38 inches high. The rail is 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter. I think it would be best to mount the red and green nav lights to this rail, but I have had a hard time finding suitable lights. Most of the commonly available lights are a couple of inches wide, too big to mount to this rail, and not oriented in a useful way.
I think a vertically oriented light or strip of lights (LED) (i.e. narrow and long) that can be screwed to the rail uprights would work best. Some where I read the suggestion to use trailer marker lights. These seem to be fairly ideal, but only are available in red, amber, and some case white. There are no green marker lights in the US.
I have found these to items:
http://www.amazon.com/Knog-Twinpack-Kayaks-Canoes-Translucent/dp/B002XFJYF2
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...30615673136&ssPageName=ADME:B:BCA:MOTORS:1123
These seem to be derived from bicycle lights.
I don't intend to run my boat at night very often if at all. But there might be situations where I don't make it home when I expected and get caught out. So it would be useful to have some sort of lights just in case.
There are small green led underwater lights that are close to the right size (also in red). However, they are obscenely priced (IMO). US$160 for 3 leds.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks.
