Re: Navy bootcamp ?

Yup ,I was aboard on the Blackbird recovery ,Uss Tripoli recovery, and one that really embarrassed the captain of the ship when we towed her into Subic bay ,the Uss Coral Sea.Kinda looked something like a Chihuahua pulling a Great Dane.We towed more ships than I can count.Even some old de-commissioned oilers out of Okinawa.Ships record roll on the clinometer was 60 degrees during a typhoon in the South China Sea.You could literally jump from deck to bulkhead in the passageways when on your way to the engine room. Many memories.Mostly fond ones of shipmates.Hey 12er ,if you haven't already, you ought to check out Classmates.com and look your ship up and see if any of your old shipmates are listed with their stories.I did,and was surprized at what I found.Even got in touch with one of my old buddies. You can include your name on the ships list of the years you served for free.

Didn't mean to stir up a hornest about what service is best(None are better than the next, we all serve in our own way) Just wanted to know what the new navy had in store for my sisters Son, Alex.

PDS green goobers for lack of a better term are simply snot balls. :D :D The bicillin shot that I was refering to was indeed in the rear end.It was more like a large syringe full of paste.Ouch!!!!Most of the other shots were from a pressure injector or what ever you call it.

Lakeman1999:

I don't advocate infantry combat roles for women either. Military excellence must never be sacrificed in order to favor those who are inherently ineffectual as combatants. The fact is that women working within physically challenging professions do not produce results equal to that of the male. Like it or not, physical and emotional gender differences are a reality that we cannot safely ignore. For the security of this nation women should not be in combat.

(Fooled ya SBN didn't I) :p

The penicilian shot in Great Lakes ,Ha, Ha will never forget it.. a large room with nothing but bed matresses lined along the wall on the floor to catch the guys who passed out! It was terrifying to watch all the poor soles ahead of you. The guy next me getting couldn't keep butt from shaking and keep moving. He had to repeat three times. You couldnt repeat the scene in a movie. ;)

Jessica Lynch, was "NOT" a hero, she will co-write a book, there will be a movie, she will get rich, and all it is doing is denigrating the real heros, past and present.
Lakeman, I have to disagree with that statement. I don't know why people keep wanting to denigrate this girl. She was a file clerk, who apparently defended herself as well as possible when she found herself in a no win situation, and then underwent torture. Besides, her rescue and the story surrounding it has been good for the country's morale. People ought to stop pissing on it. She might not be the 'hero' you'd expect, but anyone who volunteers their life for mine no matter what the capacity is a hero to me.

I agree Ladyfish..you both make different points..God bless Jessie! I can only imagine what happened to her. Maybe thats why Iraqi citizens risked their necks to help her.

Ladyfish, bitterly I agree with what you said. I say bitterly only because men don't think the same as women. Women are much more into creation, than distruction, like men. When I said bitterly, that meant unfortuantly. It's not that women can't do the same jobs that men do, it's that they won't believe that it is warrented. Who in there right mind gets in a tin can with a turrent that can shoot 125 mm shells at someone else and not expect to be shot back at? No-one, but at least we will never be hit.(yea, rite) P.D.S.

Re: Navy bootcamp ?

man I am going to go way out on a limb here but i cannot help it. I went through camp at great lakes in 1988< was a good deal. what i cannot belive is how short sighted and simple minded all these folks have been. I am medically retired with a service connected disability myself so I have the right to speak. anyway the whole point is someone asked what to expect and what others will think. first expect not to get much sleep. expect to do everything wrong and get yelled at a lot. expect to spend hours with 80 or so other sailors that are wondering what the heck they volunteered for. expoect to be hungry, thisty and so sleepy you can sleep standing. dont get caught doing it on watch navy boot camp is very different from Marine boot. but is it a nessasary difference because the mission is different.
all I can say is I will be proud to stand behind any Military person that can do the same training and fight and die for this country. if he/she has the willies to volunteer tell them a fellow sailor wishes them fair winds and following seas and pay no attention to the squabblers and the naysayrs. I have relatives from all branches that are buried now because they were someplace some one sent them.so its no worries . pick up the latest copy of the blue jackets manual and it will explain all. hahaha right back to readthe frigging manual :)
T.A. Re: Navy bootcamp ?

i'm currently an officer in the navy. went through the academy. we had 6 weeks of "boot camp" (called plebe summer), but followed it with an entire year of "boot camp" called plebe year.

i got bored and upset reading so many ridiculous posts. all i will say is the women do just fine. if you haven't been out in the ranks lately, you have no idea and should keep quiet. and people dying during boot camp is just plain stupid and unnecessary.

as for the original question, boot camp is better today than ever. we've learned and have improved the training. running 10 miles with packs doesn't always meet the objective. as long as a kid is determined and prepares, he/she should be fine. to argue which service has it tougher is childish.

Re: Navy bootcamp ?

C'mon Matt, just by the nature of each branch of the service dictates that the physical aspects of "recruit training" will be more or less demanding. There is no way anyone will convince me that Navy or Air Force "recruit training" is more physically demanding than Marine Corps or Army "recruit training". Not saying that it is more or less difficult, just more physically demanding. Drill Instructors are no longer able to physically or verbally insult a recruit. So like you said, if you are prepared and have the right attitude it is basically summer camp.

Good point Gageguy.

I had a blast at great lakes '81'. I became a Seabee. Interesting group of men there..Stationed and berthed with marines in Okinawa camp Futenma, public works dept.for a year. Our Co. was required to be a Marine. I have alot of respect for the Marines. For the infantry, boot camp never ceases, its was year around along with tactical exercises.

Re: Navy bootcamp ?

Just for the record, I thank you all for your replies and opions of how Alex will do going into the Navy bootcamp. Like has been said, each military branch has it's own objective. Bottom line, like Alex said," try not to screw up, and they won't make you do extra push-ups" Boy, is he in for a reality wakeup! During phase 3, of my bootcamp(USMC) I had to do 50 pushups in the morning before and after going to the bathroom after waking up. Nothing like 40 guys using 12 urnals in 30 seconds(2-3guys per urnal at the same time) Everybody did rely on everyone else, and hoped that they could aim. Sorry, had to put that in. PDS.
