I went to about 20 forums already, but not much help with my stiff steering on my 92 range rover. rangerover.net and difflock.com seem to have the most traffic, but even they are dead compared to Iboats. heck, I have been giving most of the tech support.

Re: need a good range rover forum

just seems too hard to turn, the problem is narrowed to the steering box (steering output arm removed) it's nice and free for the middle 4 inches, then gets hard to turn, and the steering wheel doesnt self center either. we adjusted the middle 7 inch deadspot out of it but steering is still stiff, we turned the adjustor on the side out a turn and a half. it's definately better when the engine is on so I know we have partial assist anyways

How to correctly adjust the power steering box on a Range Rover:

With the wheels in the
straight ahead position, turn the steering wheel and measure how far
it turns before resistance is felt - any more than 1in calls for
adjustment.

Raise both front wheels off the ground and
support the Land Rover on axle stands, taking safety precautions....
The vehicle front wheel must be off the ground so that you can turn
the steering over the full extent of its travel.

Use a 19mm spanner to release the locknut then
adjust, using a 6mm Allen key. turn the steering wheel from lock to
lock, and then back to the centre. If you can feel any 'tight' spots,
the steering is too tight and the Allen key should be backed off until
no stiffness can be felt, turning the steering several times over the
full extent its travel.
Once the correct amount of adjustment has
been attained, hold the Allen key in position while you tighten the
locknut. This requires some care, as it's easy to turn the Allen key
at the same time.

At 112K I strongly suspect it is worn out and the attempts to tighten it are just creating another problem.

Also.....do you have equal turns from center left and right?

roughly the same, i have not measured it, not obviously different. thanks, those were the instructions I used to adjust it. There is also an adjustment on the side of the box, I read in an online manual is used to tighten up the feel of the steering, I loosened it right off and tightened it just a 1/4 after touching

The above instructions are for the screw on the side of the box....and that's EXACTLY how you have to do it, not 1/4 turn after touching.
What else did you do/adjust?

It's very important the turns left/right from center are equal in all Rover boxes.

You need to check that and post results.

the 19mm locknut and 6mm allen key are on top of the box, right beside the bleeder screw. there is a second adjutment on the side that has a 3.5mm allenkey setscrew holing a large diameter sloted bolt about 1inch in diameter

Re: need a good range rover forum

Centr of the box is equal distance between
locks.
Remove the drop arm and turn the
steering gently until the steering box hitsits internal lock stop. From this
position you turn the opposite direction exactly 2 full turns. Turn initially towards the centr of the vehicle.

If you set the box on the mid way lock to lock position and adjust out the
free play, you will introduce a tight spot and trouble is looming further
down the line.

Re: need a good range rover forum

this vehicle was owned by a monkey. when my brother brought her home, #5&6 wires were on backwards, actually marked wrong on the cap by marker, which I think made him sell it, the engine ran like crap. (I bought it unseen) The steering had huge deadplay on it. I found the arm on the output shaft was 1 full turn loose, hence most of the play. I think the previous owner tightened the adjustment screw to compensate but to no avail. I adjusted it acording to the online manual I found, little better, but still no good. Car is almost driveable now, felt like no power assist before at all.

For $295 I'd put a new / rebuilt box on it and be done with it....
carsteering.com/addtocart~year~1992~make~Land%20Rover~model~RAN~modelname~Range%20Rover~part~82-00108~cnsuffix%3DAll%20Models.asp#

as I sid they are notorius for wearing out, leaker or not.

Yeah, my High School Senior Class picture....I wished I looked that good now!

As for the pump, I seriously doubt that is the problem, it's the box and it's either worn out or the prior owner fubared it by blind shadetree adjustments trying to correct for normal wear.

Re: need a good range rover forum

went to a steering rebuild place, the guy showed me a 3rd adjustment, said thats to be adjusted first, its a 1 1/4 inch plug on the front of it held down by a thin locknut. then the one on the side, finally the one on the top. will try it later.
