Sometimes I really get stupid. Have 3 outboards in various states of non-function. Two old V4 50 and one Evinrude 75hp all long shaft. One is V4SL-11 sn 1845375 is 1959 the other is 50hp Johnson V4S-10 sn 1804773 1958

I NEED SHORT LOLOL Conversion target is a 61 Evinrude Starfilte 75 model 50524 .

"What I think"

One engine (50hp Johnson) has a long brass connector for the shift shaft, looks to me like that must be a short shaft shift shaft I can measure the piece it's roughly same length as the long extension housing

I'm thinking I can trim the two water tubes??

If the above is true, I still need a short shaft drive shaft. Tore down the two 50hp, have yet to get into the 75. Both 50's are one piece driveshaft

I have a giant binder with service literature through those years for Evinrude, and ordered a couple different parts manuals off egag, waiting now.

The two 50's may or may not be worth messin' with. I fired them briefly on "squirted" fuel. One seems to have frozen / split part of the carb passages. One seems to have reed valve problems, have not opened it up, as it has spark but won't fire on all 4. The 75 I just bought and got running in the barrel. It may be a bit low on compression, or rings may be gummy. About 85-90is compression One 50 has a couple stripped plug holes. "For now" they are sitting.

Barrel is too smal LOL

Advice, thoughts, source for a driveshaft/ other pieces?

I converted a '59 50HPV4 to short shaft. I only needed a short driveshaft and a short shift shaft connector to do it.

The insert in the midsection unbolted.

The water tubes had extensions that pulled off.

The driveshaft pulls out of the gearcase, after you pull the waterpump. It is made to do that.

Weird, sounds like "they" did these in different ways. Seems like maybe yours was originally a short shaft. My water tubes have no such extensions. That is incouraging though, "maybe" all I need is the drive shaft. Yes, I pulled the shafts out of both 50s. As soon as the eGag parts book gets here I'll tear down the 75 maybe I'll get lucky on the water tubes in it

Water tubes will have extensions if the motor was converted from short to long. Otherwise, the tubes will be 5" longer. You can cut them with this handy dandy tube cutter, worth its weight in gold.

The BIG question here is "does anybody know" how/ where to get a short driveshaft?

Short drive shaft for a 1961 75hp is part number 378263. Have you tried here at iboats?

You might also be in trouble if that 75 has a long shift rod. It will have to be replaced, partial disassembly of gearcase is required for that.

The gearcase has to come apart anyhow for seals. Believe it or not I might be able to modify the shift rod if the short one from the 50 does not fit. Thanks for the part no. I'm waiting on a parts manual "it's in the mail."
