No Way Jasonnb!!! :p I ain't telling... :p

OK..Tell ya what, If you can guess which of my boats on the boat pictures thread are painted with Rustoleum, then I'll tell...

I tell ya, if you did'nt know it was Rustoleum, you would swear it was Gelcoat or some high $$$ stuff... It's actually great stuff because you can wet sand it and buff it out with a machine (unlike some of the urethanes) and it looks like a mirror...

How long has it held up? You've got me thinking about it now :D

If it holds up that well, I might consider it for my old tri-hull.

I actually find better colors in the rustoleum than I do in marine paint. I just wish Home Depot here caried marine paint.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON PAINTING A BOAT.

Holds up very well... Painted this boat about four years ago, and in this pic I took about a month ago, it still looks good... The key is in the prep work...
I think it's best to spray it, then wet sand and buff it to get it right...

If I would take better care of it like I should (wax it once in a while & keep it covered :( ), it would still look like the day I painted it... I figured since it was just a fishing boat (saltwater) and it was going to get beat up anyways running on the flats and backwaters, why spend the big bucks to paint something thats just going to get trashed anyway...

You can be sure I'll be painting the rest of my 21' openfisherman project with Rustoleum... (already did the bottom)
Here's a sneak preview of things to come...

Just primer... ;) Gonna post the full set of pics of the total rebuild when its finished in about a month or so..

Just so I have a grip on what you are saying.. You haven't had any adhesion problems? My old Tri-Hull only runs about 35 so I'm wondering how it would hold up on the bottom. She is only in fresh water and never sits in the water over 18-24 hours. What primer/prep are you using?

Thanks for the info, you may be caving me some ca$h!

Dude, you can't put files up with paths to a local file on your PC.. you do not have a web server running so it won't work.

You need to put the image on a web server somewhere then put the URL of the image between the IMG tags.

rgds

Franki

Re: NEED ADVICE ON PAINTING A BOAT.

I just painted my stratos bass boat used awl craft 2000 paint. Same as awl grip but awl craft can only be sprayed. As for prep work I sanded whole boat with 220 then primed boat. After primer has dried get a can of black laquer spray paint to use as guide coat. Lightly fog all areas where you will be sanding. By doing this you can see where you've sanded & high-low spots. Then sand primer with 320. If you've sander through gel coat you will have alot of small pin holes fill with 3M marine spot putty. Anything you see after priming & sanding will show after paint is applyed but look 10x worse. Remember prep work is the key you can't be lazy or you will be sorry. I've used awl grip before with brush & roller works great brush & roller marks melt in. Remember inexpensive & boats don't go together.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON PAINTING A BOAT.

Awl-grip and Imron are not user friendly at all, and without proper safty gear (respirator), they can be flat out DANGEROUS...

Both of these products are great in the hands of a professional, but a novice is just asking for trouble... I've painted about 6 boats and a couple of trucks and would not even consider these as an option for myself to use....

Both products require converters, reducers, accelerators, and other additives to work at certain temperatures and conditions... Mix it wrong and you'll have yourself a pot full of useless expensive goop... :(

An example cost for Awl-grip..@ coverage 165-260 sq. ft.per gallon..
1 quart paint $70-$100 (depends on color)
1 pint of brushing converter $50
1 quart reducer $30

Interlux enamels and one part urethanes, Z-Spar enamels, and Valspar paints are excelent low cost products for a first timer to get excellent results... (I've use most of these) Just follow the directions...

Now finaly, Rustoleum... It's not really any less expensive than the paints listed above... I've had no problems with adhesion or anything else, but I'm not going to comment on it any more because I don't want my iboats forum buddies Bit***'n at me if you were to have a problem... Works for me, might not for you... Thats why I said " please don't ask".... Cool?..

GUY'S, GEEEZ WHIZZZ.... Ya want all my secrets?... :D

Ok , in the picture, do you see the trailers winch stand and the bar running up with the come-along at the top?... Thats part of it... The Cherry picker/engine hoist which you can't see, is the other part...

Come to think about it, I posted about this before... http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=003623

Re: NEED ADVICE ON PAINTING A BOAT.

The hardest part is stripping off the old paint, try the waterbased paint strippers from ICI marketed under the ''HydroStrip'' label.Non toxic, no fumes and won't burn your skin.Check out www.napierenvironmental.com for a list of distributors
