Re: Need Advice on Purchasing Older Outboard

Well as far as being a lemon I couldn't tell ya, I'll leave that up to someone else. That model may have electric shift in it, if so I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole.

If at all possible check the compression of the motor, don't take the seller's word on it, also run the motor in a barrel before you buy it, again don't take the seller's word.

Thought I might add that just because it might run good in a barrel or on muffs doesn't mean that it will run good on the lake or river. For example you could put that motor in gear and it might stall out or it might be missing a gear.

The motor uses a distributor with a standard battery ignition system. On some of those motors the cap and rotor are hard to get and very expensive.
The electric shift is a pain to work on can be problematic if not properly cared for and certain parts are impossible to find.

OK, I read the ad. This engine is a nightmare. The owner has replaced the stock ignition system with something completely different. He's talking about having switched to a high energy system, and a Suzuki automotive distributor.

Given that and the electric shift, I'd run like the wind away from this. Even if it's running, it'll be a nightmare to maintain, since it's a homemade hybrid.

Keep looking, please.
