Need Advice on Timing & Sync

I installed a new Trigger & Stator,,Very Hard starting and rough,,,,,I did the dial indacator and reset the timimg pointer,,,,,Started right up and sounds strong,,,now I wanted to do the sync link and I was wondering , the book says it needs to be in a tank,,,could I use a large garbage pail ,,50 gal. drum cut down,,
Can I use the flush with hose ?
The motor is on the boat.
Any advice would be appreciated,,thanks in advance,,,Mike

You did not describe the size of your motor and I am experienced only with large horsepower motors, but these are my comments...

For Maximum Timing Adjustment, you crank the motor with all spark plugs removed and you do not have to have the motor in the water or on a hose. The motor does not crank fast enough or long enough to damage the impeller, and of course the motor will not overheat either.

For Idle Speed Timing Adjustment, you must do this in the water (not on a hose) with the motor in gear. You set the timing based upon idle RPMs and not with a timing light. I would think that a pail would be too small for most motor sizes.

It is a 1986 Mercury 75H.P.
I thought a large garbage can?

I would not suggest a garbage can for that size motor. You do not need it for the Maximum Timing Adjustment anyway and you can get the idle timing close with a timing light and the motor idling on a hose. Set the "preliminary" idle timing at the midpoint of the range specified for your motor and just see that it starts and idles OK. If not, move it up or back a little until it does. Then when you are next in the water, you can adjust the "final" idle timing to get the motor's idle RPMs while in gear just right.

This has been my practice for my motor, which is a 150HP. Of course, someone out there with a 75HP motor may have better advice for your particular size motor.

I suggest that you get a shop manual for your motor and follow the link and sync steps exactly as described in the manual. You need to do all the steps in the proper order as described in the manual. Each adjustment is dependent on all prior adjustments being done correctly and according to spec.

My comments on skipping the pail and doing the final idle timing in the water (with motor in gear) was good general advice. However, doing all of the link and sync steps correctly is very important and if you do it wrong you risk making an anchor out of your motor. Good luck.

I have the manual and I did the dial indicator and it started first turn,,I decided that I will take it down to the water and do it at the dock so it is all done in the steps that manual and you recommended,,,Thanks HKeiner,,,I will let you know the results next week,,,Mike
