Well, I purchased a boat to take the kids fishing and to the lake this summer. On the second trip out reverse stops working. The suzuki runs smooth, starts right up, idle's nicely etc... Forward works great but when put into reverse it is a no go. I took it to a local shop near me in South Carolia. They tried to fix it by adjusting throttle or some such thing. This didn't work.... I was then told that the gears wear no good and that a set of three gears cost around 500- 600 dollars. I was also told it would cost that much to install. The mechanic told me that he would not invest $1,200 in that old of an engine.

My question is does this sound correct? Do I have any other options? Where should I go from hear? Obviously, I'm pretty incompetent in regards to outboard mechanics. Thanks in advance for any help!

Your best bet is to buy a used lower unit. I have one from a '98 Suzuki DT 140. It is the same part numer as yours and should just bolt on. Mine is a long shaft or 20" shaft. Make sure that is what you need. Send me a PM.
